Job description

Job Description

Position Summary:

The position reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The Controller will be responsible for the internal financial reporting and management of supporting accounting staff.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Supervise the activities of the senior accounting team members
  • Ensure accuracy and timeliness of complex revenue entries

  • Ensure that all entries are made by following accounting standards (ASPE) and various Ministry of Health financial policies

  • Prepare monthly financial reporting for 3 business divisions and year-end financial reporting

  • Maintain oversight on Capex-like expenditures against budget

  • Help prepare/review bad debt calculations and ensure bad debt collection procedures are followed

  • Assist managers and site staff with various reporting needs

  • Safeguard the integrity and completeness of the financial data in our healthcare resident portal

  • Review and approve new vendors and new employees in Yardi

  • Review A/P payments, payroll and other routine duties

  • Prepare monthly accruals and true-up entries

  • Assist with year-end audits

  • Engage with CFO when accounting abnormalities or variances arise

  • Other relevant duties as required


Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with the following Qualifications / Experience:

  • Proven work experience as a Controller or another senior accounting role with several direct reports

  • 10+ years of overall accounting experience including 5+ years of supervisory responsibility

  • Accounting degree

  • CPA designation is not required but strongly preferred

  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures

  • Advanced knowledge of financial accounting software (Yardi preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite

  • Knowledge of real estate accounting would be an asset

  • Experience and ability to lead and mentor others

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a team player

  • Ability to see the big picture while maintaining high accuracy

  • Ability to meet and establish deadlines by focusing on the process necessary to produce deliverables
