Job description

Who we are:

Founded in 2010, Semios Group is a leading agricultural technology company helping growers, agronomists, and ag retailers manage over 200 million acres across five countries. Semios pioneered variable-rate pheromone-based mating disruption in orchards and has since expanded into a comprehensive portfolio covering crop protection, water management, frost control, automation, and a leading farm management information system. The Semios Group includes trusted brands such as Semios, Agworld, Altrac, and Greenbook. We continue to drive the next generation of digital agriculture, supporting growers, agronomists and ag retailers in improving sustainability and profitability.

Our innovative work has been recognized with several industry awards, including:

  • AgTech Breakthrough – Smart Irrigation Company & Pest Management Solution of the Year
  • Thrive Top 50
  • Google for Startups Accelerator Cohort
  • Global Cleantech Top 100

We know our journey is only achievable by having a great team who shares ideas, tries new things, and learns as we go.

Who you are:

You’re driven by purpose and motivated by work that matters. You’re looking for more than a role, you want to be part of a growing, forward-thinking company solving real-world challenges to improve how farming works, today and for the future.

The Senior Accountant, Inventory & Cost Management plays a critical role in financial reporting and operational accounting, with a focus on inventory and cost accounting and analysis in a dynamic environment. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate inventory valuation, maintaining strong internal controls, and supporting financial reporting processes. The position also partners cross-functionally to improve inventory processes, ERP systems, and revenue-related inventory activities.

Success in this role requires curiosity, sound professional judgment and a strong understanding of how operational activities translate into financial performance. The successful candidate will not only ensure inventory and COGS are accurately accounted for but will also provide meaningful analysis and insights to support business decisions.

What you will do:

  • Monthly Close Process: Collaborate and complete monthly, quarterly and year-end close procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements and management reporting, ensuring best practice and efficiency without compromising quality. The Monthly close process includes the preparation of journal entries, reconciliations, analytics and working papers to achieve and prepare the financial results.
  • Financial Analysis: Complete general ledger reconciliations and maintain balance sheet reconciliation files. Update, reconcile and complete management analytical reports and schedules. Complete monthly Intercompany reconciliations and month end foreign exchange adjustments.
  • Statutory & Regulatory Compliance: Contribute to the year-end audit efforts, including close collaboration with external auditors, and assist with the production of year end statutory accounts.
  • Technical Accounting: Maintain the chart of accounts, an orderly accounting filing system, and a system of controls over accounting transactions, ensuring best practices and efficiency without compromising quality. Ensure accounting practices align with accounting assertions, comply with company policies, and are in accordance with Accounting Standards.
  • Adhere to internal control processes to ensure compliance with accounting policies and mitigate financial risks. Identify opportunities for automation, standardization, and process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
  • Identify ad hoc accounting issues and improvements as they occur and recommend solutions.
  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned
  • Support Finance team members as needed periods of sickness or holiday

Inventory & Cost Management and Analysis

  • Cost of Goods Sold: Own the financial analysis and reporting of Cost of Goods Sold across all business lines. Analyze COGS by business line, product and geography. Investigate significant fluctuations and/or unusual items within COGS and explain key drivers affecting cost trends. Assess and provide analytics for whether COGS appropriately reflects operational activity. Ascertain cost allocations and costing methodologies for reasonableness.
  • Financial Insight: Translate inventory and COGS activity into meaningful business insights. Explain the financial story behind inventory movements, gross margins and cost trends. Monitor and explain gross margin trends and fluctuations. Perform profitability analysis by product and business line and investigate unusual margin variances.
  • Inventory Valuation: Own the financial integrity of inventory valuation, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards. Manage the costs associated with manufacturing, materials, labor, and other expenses, ensuring accurate financial control and recognition. Assess inventory valuation against accounting standards and business reality.
  • Monitor inventory reserves, obsolescence and recoverability. Plan, coordinate, and supervise inventory counts, ensuring reconciliation between physical and system records. Validate vendor statements and investigate discrepancies to ensure accurate reconciliation of physical inventories. Monitor and analyze inventory movements to assess their financial impact and maintain precise inventory records.
  • Leadership: . Identify cost accounting issues and recommend actionable solutions. Provide guidance and knowledge-sharing across teams, helping strengthen financial and operational awareness. Drive initiatives to improve reporting accuracy, efficiency, and process consistency. Thrive in an evolving environment by proactively addressing ambiguity and operational challenges. Act as a subject matter expert for inventory and COGS, mentoring colleagues and providing guidance to cross-functional teams to improve financial awareness and accounting consistency.
  • Finance Optimization & Improvement Initiatives: Partner closely with the Business Operations and Finance teams to refine and optimize inventory coding structures and system setups, improving accuracy, efficiency, and scalability of inventory processes. Identify gaps in current inventory workflows and drive continuous improvement initiatives to streamline inventory management within the ERP system. Support ERP enhancements, implementations, or upgrades related to inventory and supply chain modules.
  • Revenue & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with the Revenue team to ensure both revenue and costs of sales are accurately recorded, including inventory-related coding for invoicing and revenue recognition. Review billing practices tied to inventory transactions to ensure alignment with accounting policies and operational workflows.

Requirements

We want you to succeed, so you will need:

  • 5+ years of accounting experience, including 2+ years of accounting experience in inventory management and/or cost accounting in an inventory intensive environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate issues, challenge assumptions and translate financial data into meaningful business insights.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities for process improvement, influence change and implement practical, scalable solutions.
  • Comfortable working in an evolving environment, exercising sound professional judgment when navigating ambiguity and incomplete information.
  • High attention to detail with a commitment to quality, accuracy and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships across Finance, Operations, Supply Chain and other business functions.
  • Naturally curious with a desire to understand the operational drivers behind financial results rather than simply recording transactions.
  • Ability to connect accounting outcomes with operational activities and communicate findings clearly to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
  • CPA/CMA designation (or equivalent professional accounting designation) required.

Nice to have:

  • Public practice experience working with manufacturing clients.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills; experience with Power BI is an asset.
  • Experience in hardware, manufacturing, agriculture or technology environments.
  • Experience with inventory valuation, inventory analytics and profitability analysis.

Salary range: $90,000 to $100,000 per year

We publish a salary range to provide transparency and represent the full growth potential of the role; as a result, offers are made based on demonstrated mastery and experience and generally fall near the midpoint.

Benefits

Why this is the opportunity for you:

  • Purposeful Work: Make a global impact by advancing sustainable food production.
  • Our People: Work with a fun, collaborative, and supportive team.
  • Recharge: Generous vacation policy, company-paid holidays and year-end winter break.
  • Work Flexibility: Hybrid working arrangements and strong work-life balance culture.
  • Prioritize Your Well-Being: Access comprehensive health plans designed to support your physical and mental health.
  • Group RRSP, which includes a 3% company paid match after three months of employment
  • Office location that is convenient via transit and bike paths
