About Associate Vice-President, Research and Innovation at Humber:
Reporting to the Senior Vice-President, Academic, the Associate Vice-President, Research and Innovation (AVP, Research & Innovation) provides strategic leadership and institutional accountability for Humber’s applied research, innovation, and scholarly activity portfolio. At Humber, research is distinctly applied, industry-connected, and student-centered, focused on addressing real-world challenges, advancing workforce-relevant innovation, and integrating research into the student learning experience. The AVP leads the development and execution of a comprehensive research strategy that enhances Humber’s position as a leader in polytechnic education, fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, and expands partnerships with industry, community, and funding agencies.
The AVP is responsible for aligning research priorities with institutional goals, strengthening research capacity, and cultivating a culture of innovation. This includes oversight of research development, funding strategies, and external partnerships to maximize impact and outcomes. Working closely with senior leadership, faculty, and external stakeholders, the AVP ensures effective governance, compliance, and resource stewardship across the research enterprise, while positioning Humber competitively within regional, national, and global research ecosystems. Operating at the executive level, the AVP drives institutional research growth, elevates Humber’s national profile in applied research, and embeds research as a core pillar of student success, industry engagement, and long-term institutional sustainability.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership for the development and implementation of the institution’s research and innovation strategy, aligned with academic and institutional priorities.
- Lead the development and advancement of research policies, governance frameworks, and institutional standards supporting research excellence.
- Advance and strengthen applied research capacity across Faculties and academic units.
- Provide executive oversight of the institutional research lifecycle, including funding development, compliance, administration, and reporting frameworks.
- Ensure institutional compliance with research ethics, regulatory requirements, and funding agency guidelines.
- Lead the development and submission of major research proposals and drive growth in external research funding.
- Build and sustain strategic partnerships with industry, government, community organizations, and academic institutions.
- Serve as Humber’s senior research representative with government, funding agencies (e.g., NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR), and sector networks, influencing policy, funding priorities, and strategic collaborations.
- Champion the integration of research with teaching, learning, and student engagement opportunities to support skills development.
- Provide oversight of the research portfolio budget, ensuring effective stewardship of financial, human, and physical resources.
- Provide strategic leadership to research units and leaders, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
- Provide strategic oversight of research performance, outcomes, and impact, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities.
- Contribute as a member of the senior academic leadership team, supporting institutional planning, policy development, and strategic initiatives.
- Partner with academic leadership to align research priorities with program development, enrolment strategy, and emerging areas of workforce demand.

Education
Doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) is strongly preferred; a Master’s degree combined with extensive senior leadership experience in applied research and innovation may be considered.
Experience
- Minimum 12–15 years of progressive leadership experience in research, innovation, or academic administration within the post-secondary sector.
- Demonstrated experience leading institutional research strategy and operations at a senior level (e.g., Dean, Director, or equivalent).
- Demonstrated ability to lead institutional change, including scaling research capacity, building new structures, and aligning diverse stakeholders around a shared vision.
- Experience representing an institution with government bodies, funding agencies, or provincial/national research networks.
- Proven success in securing externally funded research and building industry, community, and academic partnerships.
- Provide executive oversight of the institution's research ecosystem and lifecycle frameworks, including proposal development, compliance, funding administration, and reporting.
- Strong financial and resource management experience, including oversight of complex or multi-million-dollar portfolios.
- Experience leading high-performing teams and driving results across diverse stakeholder groups.
- Deep knowledge of applied research ecosystems and funding landscapes in Canada.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives with strong strategic and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Demonstrated ability to use data, metrics, and performance frameworks to guide research strategy, assess impact, and inform decision-making.
- Commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in research, including inclusive funding practices, diverse participation, and community-engaged approaches.
Preferred: Experience within the Ontario college/polytechnic sector and demonstrated track record of externally funded research, innovation leadership, and partnership development.
