The Opportunity

Are you motivated to build modern data solutions that enable informed decision-making? The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Specialist, Data Engineering to support the design and delivery of scalable data integration and transformation solutions. Joining our Data & Analytics Delivery team, this position plays a key role in enabling analytics, reporting, and operational insights by applying sound engineering practices, DevOps principles, and cloud-based technologies.

In this role, you will contribute to the development and maintenance of enterprise data pipelines across cloud and on-premises environments. Working closely with the Senior Specialist, Data Engineering, as well as Data Architects, Solution Architects, and product teams, you will help transform raw data into curated, reliable information assets aligned with AER’s data strategy. This position plays a key role in enabling analytics, reporting, and operational insights by applying sound engineering practices, DevOps principles, and cloud-based technologies.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Develop and maintain scalable data pipelines and ETL solutions using Azure-based tools (e.g., Data Factory, Databricks, Azure Functions) to support enterprise data ingestion and transformation.

  • Collaborate with architects, analysts, and developers to translate business requirements into technical data solutions aligned with enterprise architecture and governance standards.

  • Monitor and optimize performance, reliability, and quality of data workflows, including implementing logging, alerting, and root cause analysis for data issues.

  • Participate in peer reviews, documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives within the Data Engineering practice.

  • Contribute to agile delivery processes, including sprint planning, estimation, retrospectives, and CI/CD pipeline activities.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field and 5 years of hands‑on experience in data engineering, data integration, and ETL development.

  • 1–2 years of experience working within agile teams and applying CI/CD, automated testing, and DevOps practices.

  • Experience working in Microsoft Azure environments, including Azure Data Factory, Azure Functions, and building data pipelines in Databricks.

  • Strong technical and analytical skills, including SQL proficiency and an understanding of data integration and performance tuning.

  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git, Azure DevOps).

  • Familiarity with data lakes, metadata management, data quality, and enterprise reporting concepts.

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Additional Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.

  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email . Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.

What we offer you:

  • Great benefits from your first day of work

  • Flexible Work Program - hybrid work and flexible hours

  • Edmonton: Hybrid work - employees located in Edmonton will work in office two days per week

  • All other locations: Hybrid work - employees may work remotely up to five days per calendar month, with a limit of two remote days per week

  • Defined benefit pension plan

  • Flexible benefits program options, including Personal & Health spending account(s)

  • Generous vacation entitlement and flex days
