Job Summary

The Financial Analyst is responsible for performing various accounting and analysis tasks in the VPFO, Financial Reporting department to support the consolidation and general accounting functions. This role is responsible to prepare accurate information for the various statutory reporting requirements including quarterly and annual reporting to the Province of BC and the Board of Governors. This position is primarily responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of UBC’s consolidation and various analyses to support the consolidated balances and presentation. In addition, this role assists with the preparation of UBC’s annual financial statements and note disclosure.

Organizational Status

The Financial Analyst reports to the Manager, Financial Analysis and supports the other staff in the Financial Reporting department. This position works in collaboration with many internal departments including: the Comptroller’s office, Budget and Planning Office, Internal Audit, Financial Operations, Treasury and external parties including the provincial government and external auditors.

Work Performed

1.Prepares UBC’s consolidation and supports the regular maintenance of the related processes and in particular, the following areas:

a. .Intra-company transactions & eliminations

b. Consolidate related organizations into UBC’s consolidation model

2. Prepares schedules and analysis to support financial statement presentation of various balance sheet accounts: accounts receivable, accounts payable, deferred revenue, prepaid expenses and inventory. Prepares related quarterly statutory reporting and annual financial statement note disclosure.

3. Prepares schedules and analysis to support financial statement presentation of revenue from government sources. Preparation of the related quarterly statutory reporting and annual financial statement note disclosure.

4. Prepares various schedules that support the accounting for various employee benefit related balances such as pensions, sick leave and other benefits.

5. Prepares various schedules that support UBC’s quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements.. This includes important working papers for the external auditors as required.

6. Works with the Financial Reporting team to improve existing processes to increase efficiency within the period end close.

7. Assists with the development of accounting policy and procedures in alignment with UBC’s policies and financial system.

8. Works with the Finance Manager, Financial Analysis to prepare accounting interpretations in accordance with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS);

9. Provides insight into significant financial risks and makes practical recommendations to reduce risk, improve operational performance and increase management confidence.

10.Performs other duties as requires

Consequence Of Error

The Financial Analyst exercises considerable judgment in advising management on analyses, reconciliations, reporting matters related to the application of UBC accounting policies and PSAS. The complex nature of UBC’s accounting practices and its consolidation increase the difficulties of this role. Errors in judgment could cause inefficiencies, delays and inaccuracies in the preparation of UBC’s statutory reporting.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The Financial Analyst works directly with the Manager, Financial Analysis. In addition, this role will work with other staff within the financial reporting department. Work is reviewed in terms of accuracy and effectiveness of analyses and reporting, soundness of judgment, adherence to deadlines, achievement of objectives, and overall effectiveness, analytical, and problem-solving skills demonstrated.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Completion of the CPA accounting program (CA, CGA or CMA). Minimum of five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and CPA. Minimum of three years’ experience post qualification,

A minimum of 5 years’ experience in accounting, auditing, financial reporting and analyses responsibilities, preferably in a large private organization or the public sector.

Knowledge of University policies and procedures preferred. Working knowledge of University financial and student systems Workday, PeopleSoft FMS, and reporting tools preferred.

Very strong spreadsheet Excel skills required.

Demonstrated ability to engage with many levels of management and financial personnel in an organization.

Very strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills.

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and within a team environment.

Very strong ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.

Very strong ability to maintain accuracy, attention to detail, and to demonstrate strong initiative, work ethics, and integrity.

PSAS knowledge is an asset
