Job description

Advanced Educational Support - Pitawani (LASP)

We are excited to have an Advanced Educational Support opportunity available August 27, 2026.

Lethbridge School Division embraces diversity and functions in a dynamic, innovative, and fast paced environment. To help support student success, we are looking for a flexible, empathetic, optimistic, and patient individual to work as part of a dynamic team. Advanced Educational Support (AES) personnel work as members of the school-based learning team to assist classroom and learning support teachers in providing specialized supports to students with complex learning needs.

Our Division is a proud neighbor to the largest First Nation reserve area in Canada which is called Kainai Nation. We are fortunate to learn from Indigenous communities and are committed to enhancing our understanding of the truths of our past so we can continue to move towards reconciliation.

What will you do?

Pitawani School is an integral component of Child and Family Services' Sifton Children's Centre - a treatment centre that works to meet the needs of youth, ages 13-18. The program provides a residential treatment opportunity for up to 10 students at a time, with varying lengths of stay. The student population is comprised of youth whose safety and well-being have been severely compromised due to their environmental, familial, and/or societal context, often resulting in an inability to maintain safety for self and/or others in an unsupported setting. As such, Pitawani School seeks to meet the educational needs of all students within the supported program using a trauma informed approach and delivering curricular learning combined with experiential opportunities for growth and development.

An AES is required to provide supports and services in a flexible, coordinated and effective way. The AES will work collaboratively with the Pitawani teachers and administrative team, to develop programming goals that focus on behaviour, academics, communication and social skills. The individual will work as part of a team and independently to implement programming and supports as identified by the team. This includes working with other staff in meeting the personal and social care needs of individuals and promoting their well-being in a way that values the dignity of the individual and promotes choice, respect, participation and independence. The AES in the Pitawani School will actively participate in the consultation and creation of student plans, such as behaviour support and individualized program plans. Therefore, the successful candidate will have specialized skills, training, and/or experience in the areas of trauma informed practice, conflict resolution, family support access, or advanced behavior supports.

Lethbridge School Division makes every effort to ensure staff and student safety, but not every unsafe behavior on the part of students can be anticipated. Students may display challenging/impulsive behaviors including hitting, kicking, spitting, biting, throwing items, poor attention, and difficulty making transitions.

Please note that only those selected for further consideration will be contacted regarding an interview.

What will you work?

30.50 hours/week

Monday to Friday

**Attendance in consultation meetings outside of the normal workday will be required and incorporated into the paid hours of service.

This position follows the assigned Advanced Educational Support calendar and affords the successful candidate to have some school breaks off.

Advanced Educational Support Positions are right for you if you:

  • understand of the impact of trauma and attachment interruptions and its impact to human development
  • have a willingness to work in a live-in center school, with students actively engaged in treatment
  • have training and experience in positive behaviour supports
  • can remain calm in extremely stressful situations
  • have a positive, flexible attitude
  • have collaborative problem-solving skills
  • possess decision-making skills
  • have an interest in helping people resolve problems
  • have specialized skills, training, and/or experience in an identified area (trauma informed practice, conflict resolution, family support access, Advanced Behavioral Support)
  • have training and/or experience in observation and recording techniques
  • can work independently and as part of a team

Requirements

Education and Experience Required:

  • A minimum of a 2-year post secondary diploma or degree in a Human Services related area of study, such as Child and Youth Care or Psychology is required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

In order to ensure and maintain a safe and secure working and learning environment, applicants new to Lethbridge School

Division who are offered employment must provide:

  • A police information check; including Vulnerable Sector Check from Police Services or an RCMP detachment that does not have any charges or convictions.
  • A satisfactory Intervention Record Check from South Region Alberta Child and Family Services.
  • Proof of photo identification, may be a valid driver’s licence, provincial identification card as issued by a licensed government registry office, valid passport or Nexus card. If one cannot be provided, a new card must be obtained and proof of application provided within three days of hire.
  • Documentation of a valid Social Insurance Number in the employee’s legal name. If valid Social Insurance documentation in the current legal name can not be provided, the successful candidate will be required to obtain a new one within three days of hire.

Benefits

The wage range for this position is $28.43 - $30.52/hour; effective September 1, 2026, rate ranges will increase to $29.28 - 31.44/hour depending on the candidate's education and experience.

Lethbridge School Division is committed to supporting and promoting the wellness of our employees through our diverse benefit plan. We offer a comprehensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our employees and their families, including:

  • Health and Dental Coverage: 100% employer paid premiums for health and dental care.
  • Health/Wellness Spending Account (HSA/WSA): Access to a health/wellness spending account.

  • Pension Plan: Competitive retirement plan to support your future.
  • Community Discounts: Exclusive discounts at a variety of local community/fitness facilities within Lethbridge.
  • Life Balance: Enjoy having evenings, weekends & school breaks off.

This position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students by supporting their individual needs and fostering success. If you are passionate about education and have the skills and dedication required for this role, we encourage you to apply.
