Job description

Job Description

This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA). The successful candidate will be offered a tenure-track appointment with the rank of Assistant Professor, in accordance with the Academic Faculty Agreement, and will receive a comprehensive benefits package.

The Augustana Campus / Faculty of the University of Alberta is seeking an Indigenous scholar for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor for an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026. This is an open disciplinary search, meaning any candidate from the sciences, social sciences, humanities, or fine arts is encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to scholars whose research program engages with Indigenous Nations and communities, and their wisdom, cultures, experiences or knowledge systems. In addition to teaching courses and conducting research in their academic discipline, the successful candidate will teach Indigenous Studies courses, such as Introduction to Indigenous Studies (AUIND 101) and Selected Topics in Indigenous Studies (AUIND 300).

In accordance with the University of Alberta's Indigenous Strategic Plan, Braiding Past, Present, and Future, sections 10 and 12, and in response to Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Augustana seeks to increase the number of Indigenous scholars within the Faculty while supporting them to build successful careers. Therefore, selection is limited to Indigenous Peoples of Canada who identify as First Nation, Métis, or Inuit. Candidates are encouraged to share how their connections to Indigenous communities inform their teaching, research, scholarly, and / or artistic activities.

Location

This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at the Augustana Campus in Camrose.

Background and Community Engagement

The University of Alberta acknowledges that it is located on Treaty 6 territory and the Métis Homeland, and respects the histories, languages and cultures of First Nations, Métis, Inuit and all First Peoples of Canada. The Augustana Campus sits on the traditional land of the Maskwacis Nêhiyawak, Niitsitapi, Nakoda, and Tsuut'ina Nations, the Métis, and other Indigenous peoples. The campus includes Indigenous initiatives such as the Wahkohtowin Lodge, a space for Indigenous students and community members, Indigenous course programming, and an Indigenous Speaker Series.

Augustana provides a distinctive learning experience characterized by close connections among students, staff, and faculty, and many opportunities for student participation in community projects, field trips, varsity athletics, clubs, and campus organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction in undergraduate courses in one or more of our undergraduate academic programs, including a mix of courses from their academic discipline and Indigenous studies courses.
  • Design course syllabi, create course materials, evaluate student performance, prepare exams or evaluation tools, and assign grades.
  • Demonstrate scholarship and remain current in the discipline or profession by keeping class material relevant to the needs of students.
  • Maintain an active research program or creative practice, with complementary expertise in community-engaged research welcomed.
  • Provide service to the university and the community through committees, programs and initiatives that weave together the life of the Augustana campus with constituencies in the region and beyond.

This position requires that the incumbent be eligible to participate in government‑funded research projects, including the active ability to receive federal research funds on behalf of the university. Individuals with an active affiliation with a Named Research Organization are ineligible to participate in government‑funded research projects in Sensitive Technology Research Areas in Canada. Applicants must be able to meet all applicable research security requirements.

Qualifications

  • A PhD, or equivalent, that is completed (or near completion) before the start date of this position.
  • Evidence of effective teaching at the post‑secondary level.
  • Evidence of an emerging program of academic research.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of citizenship, membership, or belonging in a First Nation, Inuit, or Métis community.
  • Application Instructions

Please submit the following documents :

  • Cover Letter
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Teaching Dossier (including a teaching statement, sample course materials, and, if available, teaching evaluations)
  • Research Statement (outlining current and future research interests)
  • Names and contact information for three references.
  • Candidates are encouraged, but not required, to submit a self‑identification narrative / story of their Indigenous lived experience.

    About Us

We are committed to creating an inclusive and accessible hiring process for all candidates. If you require accommodations to participate in the interview process, please let us know at the time of booking your interview and we will make every effort to accommodate your needs.

All University employees have a responsibility to foster a workplace that prioritizes safety in all its forms—physical, cultural, and psychological.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. If suitable Canadian citizens or permanent residents cannot be found, other individuals will be considered.

We encourage women, First Nations, Métis and Inuit persons, members of visible minority groups, persons with disabilities, persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity and expression, and all those who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas and the university to apply.

    About the Team

Located in Camrose on Treaty 6 territory, the Augustana Campus offers a unique learning experience rooted in the liberal arts and embedded in rural Alberta. Home to approximately 900 students, the campus offers undergraduate and graduate programs through the Augustana Faculty and the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine.
