Job Summary


The Programmer Analyst I programs software application modules and codes, tests, debugs, documents, and maintains those modules.

Organizational Status
UBC’s Learning Technology Innovation Centre’s (LTIC) mandate is to catalyze and elevate learning technology application, innovation, and inquiry at UBC. Under academic leadership, LTIC is charged with meeting UBC’s needs for faculty and students in using and transforming learning technology, including playing a pivotal role in the support of Artificial Intelligence in research, development, and education, across the entirety of UBC.

Work Performed

Specific Duties

  • Programs discrete but complex modules for use in enterprise production systems.
  • Uses HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and other programming scripting and database query languages to enhance and support LTIC Incubator and other web applications used in learning technology at UBC.
  • Documents code for internal and open-source distribution and creates user manuals and documentation for end users.
  • Provides technical advice on system applications; advises programmers developing faculty and/or department specific modules; ensures any unit specific modules are repurposed for use in the wider UBC community. Advises through face-to-face interaction, online, and the email/ticketing system.
  • Be the first point-of-contact technical support for incubator clients via email/ticketing system.

Core Duties

  • Programs small/discrete software application modules.
  • Conducts testing and debugging of small modules to ensure application meets specifications.
  • Prepares programming documentation for assigned programs.
  • Supports software development lifecycle and applies and follows appropriate programming/development methodologies and best practices as instructed.
  • Maintains appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools.
  • Participates in project planning and implementation.
  • Builds and maintains good working relationships and collaborates with others to achieve client objectives.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Makes decisions within established guidelines regarding the application of computing devices or programs to meet set requirements or makes decisions regarding solutions to defined problems.

Supervision Received
Works autonomously in accordance with general instructions as to methods and procedures with general direction from Lead, LTIC Incubator. Work is reviewed in terms of achievement of desired results.

Supervision Given
May manage co-op students and/or student employees engaged in software development activities. May supervise Programmer Analyst 1(A) roles in software development activities.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or technical diploma in computer science, or other relevant discipline, or combination of education and relevant work experience.

Experience

  • 1-2 years' experience working in application and software development related to learning technologies.
  • Experience working in a university environment preferred.

Other

  • 1-2 years' experience with software design and development in a test-driven environment
  • Familiarity with Agile Development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with responsible use of Generative AI Coding Agents.
  • Experience working with frameworks/systems.
  • Experience writing software documentation, training manuals, and online knowledge bases.
  • Ability to deliver conceptual design.
  • Professional HTML development, including XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript that conforms to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
  • Web-specific graphic design experience (i.e. Figma).
  • Understanding of back-end and database technologies (NodeJS, PHP, MongoDB).
  • Good troubleshooting and debugging skills.
  • Adept with E-mail and online discussion software.
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
