NAIT Applied Research is workingclosely with Indigenous communities across Treaty 6, 7 and 8 territories to aidthem in establishing environmental monitoring programs that fit their needs andwhich are sustainable.
The goal of the program is for communities to gaincontrol over monitoring the health and condition of their local environment andfor the communities themselves to be able to develop data-enabled environmentalstewardship strategies.
The successful candidates for theseStudent CO-OP Research Assistant positions will be enthusiastic individualswith background in one or more of the following disciplines : environmentalsciences, biology, and / or analytical chemistry.
The Research Assistants will bepart of a team of scientists, and technicians operating under the direction ofthe Environmental Research Associate Indigenous-led Projects.
A strongaptitude for teamwork and collaboration, comfort with failure, patience,tenacity, sense of humor, passion for hands-on learning, and the ability towork in the field and the laboratory are considered essential.
Key Responsibilities :
- Travel to Indigenous communities and field locationsas part of a NAIT team to assist with capacity building initiatives.
- Participate in collaborative work with Indigenouslearners in both the field and within NAIT’s laboratory environments.
- Communicate results and observations effectivelybetween project teams and community partners as needed.
- Perform general laboratory tasks including solutionpreparation, experimental setup, glassware cleaning, basic field, andanalytical equipment maintenance.
- Conduct routine testing of freshwater samples usingstandard procedures for pH, conductivity, TSS, Ion Chromatography and assistresearchers with nonstandard testing using various chromatography andspectroscopy techniques.
- Assist in maintaining laboratory in optimal stateincluding general housekeeping, chemical inventory / handling, and updatingsafety protocols and hazard assessments.
- Data entry, data processing, and presentation creationusing Word, Excel, and Power Point
Skills & Abilities :
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work in a team
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Effective time management and planning
- Proficient in use of Microsoft Office applications(Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Qualifications :
- Must be able to work full-time from September 2024 toAugust 2025.
- Must live or study in Alberta
- Must be legally entitled to work and study in Canada
- Must be able to work unsupervised as needed, andparticipate in team culture
- Must enjoy working outdoors
- Strong attention to detail
- Class 5 driver’s license and willingness to travel isan asset
Applicants witheducation credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentialsevaluated by World Education Services or the International QualificationsAssessment Service (IQAS).
Remuneration : $17.48 per hour, plus 12% in lieu of statutory holidays and vacation pay (Classification- Student Research Assistant l).
Thisposition is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE)Collective Agreement.
