The Health & Wellness Centre at the University of Toronto Scarborough provides health promotion, primary care and counselling services in an interprofessional shared care model.

The team delivers student-focused care and support that is compassionate, culturally responsive and evidence-based and supports students in achieving their goals and potential by inspiring hope, promoting healthy choices and supporting the healing process.

Reporting to the Director, Health & Wellness Centre (HWC), the Assistant Director provides leadership to the administrative, health promotion, navigation of care, counselling, and primary care teams on campus and is a key member of the departmental leadership team.

The incumbent will manage health promotion, primary care, navigation of care, counselling, and administrative staff to clarify and strengthen the roles and responsibilities of staff to reflect emerging organizational priorities.

The Assistant Director is responsible for coordination, management, and implementation of all services and programs to ensure the work of the HWC can be carried out efficiently and effectively.

The Assistant Director is responsible for the daily operations of the Centre, identifying issues, recommending solutions, responding to the priorities of HWC, and providing support to the Director, as needed.

The role of the Assistant Director will continue to evolve, and the individual must be willing to respond to the given priorities of the day and be willing to work cooperatively in a challenging and dynamic environment.

The Assistant Director will also provide recommendations to the Director regarding initiatives, initiate and implement organizational changes as required, ensuring integration of sound management practices and the optimal use of resources within the departmental structure to support the HWC’s operational plan and strategic goals.

Minimum Qualifications :

I.EDUCATION : Master’s degree in a relevant area of study or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.

II.EXPERIENCE : Minimum five years of demonstrated operational management experience with progressive responsibilities in managerial leadership managing large complex teams - preferably in the health care sector in a post-secondary setting, public health, workplace health, medical setting, or comparable environment.

Experience supervising and leading teams, preferably in a unionized environment. Experience with health programs, compiling and analyzing data, writing reports, working on time-sensitive projects and managing multiple priorities.

Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion in community development. Proven ability to develop, monitor and evaluate strategic plans, and programs.

III.SKILLS : Excellent organizational skills. Proven leadership, prioritization, project management, and decision-making skills.

Solid computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office. Ability to navigate competing priorities efficiently and effectively.

Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to analyze complex situations, identify key issues, and balance both long-term objectives and day-to-day operations.

  • IV.OTHER : Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential; demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders comfortably and professionally with a customer-service orientation and maintaining confidentiality, including but not limited to students, staff, faculty, and senior administration;
  • exceptional communication (oral and written) skills; able to adapt to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities, and strong time-management abilities;
  • capacity to react to adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently in a collaborative manner; flexibility during periods of rapid change;

persuasive, encouraging, and motivating. Must be able to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.

Strong influencing and negotiating skills. Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including upper management, staff, clients, and other departments;

strong conflict management skills - ability to defuse tension among direct reports and project teams. Ability to bring team success while recognizing organizational unit sensitivities and culture.

Strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies. Excellent customer service skills.

Critical ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment. Demonstrable ability to make difficult decisions, particularly at critical junctures.

Forecasting resource shortages and reacting to prevent staffing and project bottlenecks from occurring.
