Job Description

Shkaabe Makwa, Clinical Services is currently seeking a full-time, permanent First Nations, Inuit or Métis (FNIM) Social Worker 2 to provide addictions and concurrent disorders service to FNIM clients on an outpatient basis, as well as providing support to FNIM clients in CAMH inpatient services.

Shkaabe Makwa, Clinical Services is a culturally integrated program for the healing, empowerment and recovery of FNIM clients and patients.

Reporting to the Manager of Shkaabe Makwa, Clinical Services, the successful candidate will provide direct clinical care as part of an FNIM inter-professional team.

Accountabilities will include facilitating orientation circles, providing comprehensive assessments, group facilitation on topics of recovery and coping skills around substance use, mental health and trauma, limited individual counselling and discharge planning.

They will also support our Cultural Care Practitioners in conducting ceremonies which may include singing, drumming, smudging, providing traditional teachings, creating sacred bundle items (eg.

hand drums, rattles, medicine pouches) and participation in the Sweat Lodge. The candidate will liaise with other inpatient and outpatient CAMH services as well as FNIM community agencies to coordinate and deliver care.

The candidate will be able to work with clients from diverse backgrounds including people who identify along the 2SLGBTQ+ spectrum.

The candidate will be capable of providing supervision to Master of Social Work students. The candidate will contribute to Shkaabe Makwa, Clinical Services program development and processes, research activities, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement activities.

Workload data entry is a job requirement. Ability to work flexible / evening hours may be a requirement. Other related duties may be assigned as required.

This position will be located primarily at 60 White Squirrel Way at the Queen Street Site.

Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate will possess a Master’s of Social Work degree combined with a preferred 3 years of post-graduate work experience and be registered and a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.

The successful applicant will also be eligible for adjunct / status-only appointments with university faculties associated that have affiliation agreements with CAMH.

Clinical experience working with FNIM people who have addictions and concurrent disorders is preferred. The successful candidate will self-identify as First Nations, Inuit or Métis and possess demonstrated skills and experience in providing quality care to First Nation, Inuit and Métis clients, collaborating with First Nation, Inuit or Métis service providers, organizations and communities.

You will have demonstrated skills and proficiency in the areas of assessment and treatment of concurrent disorders, goal setting, stages of change, relapse prevention planning, substance use psychoeducation topics, treatment planning, first stage trauma treatments, harm-reduction, trauma-informed care, risk assessment, crisis intervention, de-escalation and care provision for 2SLGBTQ+ clients.

Certification with substance use interventions such as Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy and Seeking Safety are assets.

Knowledge of FNIM cultures, history, historical trauma, intergenerational trauma and social determinants of health are a requirement.

The candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of community FNIM substance use service delivery networks, organizations, communities, resources and referral sources both in Toronto and the province of Ontario.

The candidate will have a foundation of cultural / traditional knowledge systems and the ability to share cultural / traditional perspectives on substance use, mental health and healing.

The candidate will have familiarity and understanding of how cultural / traditional teachings, practices and ceremonies can be integrated with evidence based clinical interventions in the treatment of concurrent disorders.

Demonstrated skills in therapeutic engagement and rapport, conflict resolution, group facilitation is essential. You will possess excellent organization skills, effective written and verbal communication skills, oral presentation skills, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and within a dynamic team environment.

This position also requires the ability to manage time, priorities, and meet administrative deadlines. Computer skills, including documenting on an electronic health record system, word processing, electronic communication, and imputing workload measures are required.

Bilingualism (French / English) and / or First Nations, Inuit or Métis language skills would be assets.
