Generalpractitioners and family physicians diagnose and treat the diseasesphysiological disorders and injuries of patients.

They provideprimary contact and continuous care toward the management ofpatients health. They usually work in private practice includinggroup or team practices hospitals and clinics.

Residents intraining to be general practitioners or family physicians areincluded in this unitgroup.

JOBDUTIES :

Here aresome of the main activities and tasks that General practitionersand family physicians have to perform and some of the physicaldemands they involve :

Examine patients andtake their histories order laboratory tests Xrays and otherdiagnostic procedures and consult with other medical practitionersto evaluate patients physical and mental health

Prescribeand administer medications and treatments

Perform andassist in routine surgery

Provide emergencycare

Provide acute care management

Vaccinatepatients to prevent and treat diseases

Deliver babies andprovide prenatal and postnatal care

Advise patients andtheir families on health care including health promotion diseaseillness and accident prevention

Provide counselling andsupport to patients and their families on a wide range of healthand lifestyle issues

Perform patient advocacyrole

Coordinate or manage primary patientcare

Provide continuous care topatients

Supervise home care services

Reportbirths deaths and contagious and other diseases to governmentalauthorities.

Abachelors degree or in Quebec completion of a college program andone year of premedicine university studies is usuallyrequired.

Graduationfrom an approved medical school and two to three years of familymedicine residency training arerequired.

Completionof the qualifying examinations of the Medical Council of Canada orthe Coll ge des m decins du Qu bec and licensing by the provincialor territorial licensing authority arerequired.
