JOB SUMMARY: The Wellbeing Communications Specialist reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Director of Communications with joint accountability to the Director of Well-Being.

To assist in the performance of communication and information management activities related to Six Nations Department of Well-Being.

To manage and direct communications, and the dissemination of information relating to external and internal communications, communications strategies and website communication for Department of Well-Being; within the policies and procedures established by Six Nations Elected Council.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University degree (with a minimum of two years related work experience) or a College diploma (with a minimum of four years related work experience) from a recognized educational institution; in public relations, communications, marketing, or journalism.
  • Experience working within a First Nation administration considered an asset.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to write for multiple genres (ex/ press releases. web material. social media. technical documents. proposals. etc.).
  • Must be aware of the political relationships between First Nations and the Federal and Provincial Governments.

POSITION TITLE: Well-Being Communications Specialist

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Director of Communications with joint accountability to the Director of Well-Being.

PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

To assist in the performance of communication and information management activities related to Six Nations Department of Well-Being.

To manage and direct communications, and the dissemination of information relating to external and internal communications, communications strategies and website communication for Department of Well-Being; within the policies and procedures established by Six Nations Elected Council.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical Functions

  • External Communications
  • Monitor public opinion regarding political and community issues
  • Provide support and assistance to requests for media interviews with Six Nations Department of Well-Being
  • Coordinate communications: flyers, public announcements and press releases for Six Nations Department of Well-Being
  • Provide timely response to enquiries from the general public and the media.
  • Act as a liaison with outside agencies
  • Liaise with Health programs and Six Nations of the Grand River Communications in communicating and coordinating public events involving visiting dignitaries, opening ceremonies, opening new facilities, etc.
  • Promote and protect reputation of Department of Well-Being and the community
  • Internal Communications
  • Advise, update and report to the Director on the status of current events and emerging issues
  • Provide support to senior staff and Department of Well-Being regarding strategic planning, accreditation and communication issues
  • Support the development and implementation of a Department of Well-Being communication plan and strategies for the organization
  • Provide support and assistance in the development and implementation of internal communications policies
  • Liaise with Departmental staff for information gathering, information dissemination and in production of communication materials
  • Provide communication support to Departmental initiatives
  • Social Media
  • Ensure the information contained on Department of Well-Being's website and social media accounts are kept accurate, timely, and relevant
  • Review all materials to be entered onto the Department of Well-Being website/social media accounts
  • Participate in the creation of any video content to be added to Department of Well-Being's website or social media accounts
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of Department of Well-Being's social media efforts across multiple platforms
  • Research trends and provide advice regarding best practices in all areas of electronic communications

Communications Functions - Compose briefing notes, memos, correspondence, and updates etc.

  • External Communications
  • Prepare press releases, announcements, advisories, media alerts, fact sheets, background documentation, and other media documentation
  • Review and edit outgoing media messages and communication documents.
  • Oversee the production and distribution of visual and audio electronic materials

Internal Communications

  • Prepare briefing notes, updates, memos, and types of internal communication documents for review by the Director
  • Coordinate and review materials for annual reports and other documents

Other Functions

  • Performs other job related duties as may reasonably be required by the Directors and the Health Senior Leadership Team
  • Assist with special projects as requested
  • Provides support to the Six Nations Emergency Measures Plan by ensuring awareness of the Emergency Measures Plan and assistance as instructed by the Director of Department of Well-Being
  • It is the responsibility of the employee to be aware of and adhere to all policies and procedures, including those that relate to client safety, staff safety and risk management

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work requires a high degree of interaction with the Director of Communications, the Department of Well-Being, and external organizations and individuals. Subject to demands, deadlines, some stressful situations and interruptions; need to prioritize tasks, maintain composure in demanding situations, and maintain confidentiality. A flexible work schedule is required.

  • Receives direction, instructions, supervision and interacts to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively.

With Well-Being Leadership

  • Receives directions, guidance, encouragement; discusses plans and priorities

With External Agencies

  • Represents and promotes Six Nations interests relative to Department of Well-Being; maintains awareness of legislative policy and program changes; seeks to develop close working relationships.

With the Public/Government/Outside Agencies/The Press

  • Represents and promotes the Department of Well-Being interests of Six Nations; works in a courteous, co-operative positive and proactive manner, provides information and advice.
  • Promotes the Department of Well-Being in a positive and professional manner; interacts cooperatively and courteously.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Minimum Requirements:

  • University degree (with a minimum of two years related work experience) or a College diploma (with a minimum of four years related work experience) from a recognized educational institution; in public relations, communications, marketing, or journalism.
  • Experience working within a First Nation administration considered an asset.

Other Related Skills:

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to write for multiple genres (ex/ press releases. web material. social media. technical documents. proposals. etc.).
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to effectively set priorities and multi-task.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of computer applications including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Publisher and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must be trustworthy, reliable and aware of Personal Health Information Protection Act to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be aware of the political relationships between First Nations and the Federal and Provincial Governments.
  • Experience working with various types of social media platforms.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical ability and attention to detail.
  • Ability to provide external representation on behalf of an organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Ability to develop and manage project budgets

IMPACT OF ERROR:

Error in judgement and conduct of duties may lead to lost credibility, poor public relations and misinformation being provided. Errors could result in embarrassment to the Department of Well-Being and Six Nations of the Grand River; loss of public confidence and unnecessary conflict leading to lack of trust.

CONTROL:

Guiding principles set by the Department of Well-Being and the Six Nations Elected Council.

Must work within the Policies and Procedures established by the Six Nations Elected Council for the Department of Well-Being.
