ECON 1P92 – TEACHING ASSISTANT
PRINCIPLES OF MACROECONOMICS
Compensation
• Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $ per hour.
(Rate effective September 1, 2024)
• Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $ per hour. (Rate effective
September 1, 2024)
• In cases where additional duties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant’s duties, these hours shall be compensated at the
appropriate Teaching Assistant rate.
Duties
The duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant shall be in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective
Agreement. Associated with the position of Teaching Assistant is a nominal workload of 60 hours per half-credit course. This nominal
workload is normally made up of scheduled contact time with students and non-classroom time. The non-classroom work may include
preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours,
and other course administration as may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- applicants must have achieved a minimum of 80% in the course;
- applicants must be at least third- or fourth-year students currently enrolled in an Honours degree in Economics, or who have completed an Honours degree in Economics or equivalent;
- the successful applicant must have effective communication skills including the ability to explain subject material to students, be punctual in attending classes, and be able to meet appropriate deadlines; and
- the successful applicant must be readily available to meet on campus during regular office hours throughout the semester.

As per Article of the Collective Agreement:
Graduate students enrolled at Brock University shall not accept an appointment in excess of an average of ten (10) hours per week over an academic term, in which she is enrolled as a full-time student, without the prior permission of the Dean of Graduate Studies;
Undergraduate students enrolled at Brock University shall not accept more than nine (9) Teaching Assistant appointments, or the equivalent of nine (9) Teaching Assistant appointments in any classification, per term, minus the number of courses in which that student is currently enrolled;
Part-time Graduate students and non-students shall not accept any appointment which, taken together with all other appointments at the University, would cause the member to exceed the maximum number of regular hours ( not overtime hours) allowable in a work week under the Employment Standards Act, as amended from time-to-time.
Permission to exceed the above-mentioned workload limits should be obtained prior to application.
