Job Title: Distribution TechnologistJob DescriptionAs a Distribution Technologist, you will join an engineering team responsible for maintaining and expanding civil and electrical projects. These projects involve the installation, alteration, extension, and repair of various electrical and civil equipment, which are controlled, monitored, and automated by complex circuitry, electronics, and advanced communication networks.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, create, modify, or review civil and electrical designs, including cable chamber/vaults, equipment layouts, mechanical drawings, and crossings such as highways, train tracks, and bridges.
- Complete drawings in accordance with Subsurface Utility Engineering Standards using Microstation.
- Review and calculate invert data for congested civil subsurface utility design to generate accurate profiles and cross-sections.
- Read, understand, and interpret various types of underground civil utility drawings.
- Perform initial quality control of field deliverables, ensuring they meet standards and best practices.
- Communicate directly with field staff to clarify any questions or required information within documents received from the field.
- Organize and review all field documents and files for completeness.
- Ensure that utility record drawings are collected, complete, and thoroughly reviewed, including those provided by the client.
- Understand and correlate between utility records, construction plans, and field documents to document the presence of underground and/or aerial utilities.
- Work through and complete various deliverables and supporting documents, including drawings, reports, and traffic control plans.
Essential Skills- Minimum of 3+ years of experience in electrical design, specifically in overhead and underground distribution.
- Proficiency in Microstation or AutoCAD, with a preference for Microstation.
- At least 2 years of experience supporting Toronto Hydro utility projects.
- Willingness to travel to site 10% of the time.
- Experience with pole loading analysis, voltage drop calculations, and cable pulling calculations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- 4+ years of civil design experience with underground distribution lines.
- Design and drafting experience with knowledge of municipal consent requirements.
- Experience working in a utility environment, particularly in civil design.
- Drafting knowledge, especially two-dimensional drafting.
- Ambition to learn and adapt between civil and electrical design disciplines.
- Experience with design build contractors and SpidaCalc is an asset.
- AutoCAD expertise is an asset and can be considered in lieu of Microstation experience.
Work EnvironmentInitially, work is fully on-site from Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm, with flexibility for appointments or personal reasons. After six months, a hybrid schedule is available with three days in the office and two days from home. Tuesday and Thursday are mandatory in-office days. The team includes 28 members, allowing close mentorship from engineers. The company values a trusting and flexible work environment, supporting growth and development for all team members.
