AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY :
The successful applicant will assist the Supervisor, Coordinator and other Traffic Signals staff with various tasks related to the day‑to‑day operation of the traffic signals system, traffic signal construction, traffic signal maintenance and the deployment of the City’s advanced traffic management system. Work may include construction inspections, traffic studies, field investigation of traffic signal complaints, surveys, data collection, GIS integration, advance traffic management system monitoring, system data mining and report generation and traffic signal maintenance program tracking and analysis. The position is intended to act as a supporting role in the traffic signals operation, construction and field roles in which the successful applicant will perform investigations, studies and inspections of the City of Brampton’s traffic signals system.
- Assist in the design, layout and activation of traffic signals related hardware
- Maintain traffic signal timing database.
- Conducting site visits with staff if required.
- Complete administrative duties, including data entry and data management, uploading correspondence, notes and photographs.
- Conducts specialized studies and / or field investigations related to traffic collisions, speeding, delays and roadway capacity at signalized intersections. Makes recommendations based on observations and data collected by traffic sensors and central system reports.
- Undertakes duties as assigned related to the operation of the advance traffic management system, including system health monitoring, signal modifications and implementation, creates maintenance reports for traffic signals maintenance contractor, monitors video feeds from intersections and reviews operation of video and radar vehicle detection devices, monitors traffic congestion via the City’s Intelligent Count Station System and Waze, assists in the creation of signal timing databases and bench testing, assists with the evaluation and testing of new electronic system components such as vehicle detection and data collection devices.
- Review requests and complaints from the public, councillor and their administrative assistants, contractors regarding traffic signal operations / timing, road congestion, intersection control and access issues.
- Assist to review of traffic impact studies, identify, develop and analyze alternative solutions to traffic problems; and recommend best course of action. Recommend improvements which may include installation of traffic controls, review of traffic signal phasing and timings.
- Prepare technical memos and reports to communicate technical results and recommendations;
- Attending meetings and preparing meeting summaries, as required.
- Provide support to the department with other duties as assigned.
