Job description

Casual On-Call Position

Hours to be Determined (May Include Evenings and Weekends)

Pay Grade H ($33.38 to $35.72 per hour)

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is a school of students, faculty, thinkers and makers unlike any other. Established in 1925, we are the only specialized, accredited, public, post-secondary university in British Columbia solely devoted to education and research in the creative sector and its associated knowledge economy. We merge research, critical theory and studio practice in an interdisciplinary environment, strengthening our work by the integration of our personal and professional practices. Our strategy, facilities, partnerships and resources are intentionally student-centred to foster dialogue, expression and open connections in support of the next generation of creative and cultural leaders.

The Studio Technician, Shop Support, may provide technical support in multiple Emily Carr shops, to assist students to develop and articulate technical skills in the support of curriculum. The Studio Technician demonstrates to students, staff, and faculty the safe and appropriate use and application of equipment, tools, materials, techniques, and processes, and advises students in solving technical problems.

As the successful applicant, you should possess :

  • Two-Year Diploma in studio arts.
  • Minimum two years’ direct experience in a comparable technical position in a post-secondary institution.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Sound practical experience with all equipment, materials, and techniques related to wood production and, mold-making practices.
  • Digital fabrication experience an asset.
  • Experience in organizing and directing the work of others.
  • Ability to make independent decisions within policies and guidelines.
  • Ability to clearly communicate information and demonstrate the use of equipment to non-technical users in support of an open inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Physical stamina and mobility to permit lifting, carrying, and moving heavy objects.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, creativity, and leadership in order to support the successful operation of the area.

Typical Duties include :

  • Provides technical support in the area and assists students to develop and articulate technical skills in support of the curriculum.
  • Provides follow-up technical instruction and advises on the safe and appropriate use of shop hand tools, air tools, and stationary power equipment with a range of materials including : wood, plaster, vacuum forming, silicone, casting materials.
  • Advises students as to the wide variety of methods and processes available to express ideas and concepts and assists them in developing solutions to their technical problems on work in-progress.
  • May deliver technical workshops and demonstrations for students, staff, and faculty as determined by the supervisor.
  • Under the direction of the Studio Technician 3, may conduct research regarding equipment, implementation of studio practices, safety procedures, and product and material handling.
  • Maintains studios and classrooms in operational condition and monitors general cleanliness. Liaises with the area technical team to maintain supplies, order and distribute materials, and maintain records for the work area. Ensures the general cleanliness, safety, and security of the area.
  • Performs simple repairs as required. Refers more complex repair problems to supervisors.
  • In conjunction with the area Coordinator and the Studio Technician 3, liaises with other Studio Technicians throughout the University, to share resources and minimize conflicts. Exchanges technical information, and works to ensure continuity of technical instruction throughout the University.
  • Ensures a safe working and learning environment by adhering to WHMIS, WCB, and Emily Carr OH+S policies and procedures.
