Job Title: Welder and Fitter

Job Description

This hands-on role supports a heavy fabrication and machining facility that specializes in custom metal fabrication, large welded assemblies, and precision machining for complex industrial systems. You will independently interpret drawings, lay out and fit components, and weld to customer and industry specifications in a high-quality, safety-focused manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and GD&T standards to ensure accurate fit-up and welding of components.
  • Lay out, position, align, and securely clamp components using measuring tools, fixtures, and tack welds to meet dimensional requirements.
  • Perform welding operations to customer and industry specifications, applying the correct weld size and process for each application.
  • Inspect welds for defects using gauges, visual inspection, and appropriate analysis techniques, and correct issues as required.
  • Carry out grinding, carbon arc cleaning, scale removal, and beveling to prepare and finish weld joints and fabricated parts.
  • Shape and cut metal parts using arc or flame cutting equipment in accordance with drawings and work instructions.
  • Use measuring tools and strong mathematical skills to verify dimensions and tolerances throughout the fabrication process.
  • Work closely with machining and other fabrication personnel to coordinate work on large, custom industrial assemblies.
  • Operate safely around overhead cranes, hoists, and rigging equipment when handling large steel components.
  • Follow strict safety, quality, and housekeeping standards in a fast-paced industrial shop environment.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience in heavy fabrication environments working with large steel components.
  • Proficiency in welding processes suitable for structural and custom fabrication work.
  • Ability to interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and GD&T standards accurately.
  • Strong mathematical and measurement skills for precise layout and verification of components.
  • Hands-on experience with grinding, carbon arc cleaning, scale removal, and beveling.
  • Skilled in using measuring tools such as tape measures, squares, levels, and gauges for fit-up and inspection.
  • Experience operating or working around overhead cranes, hoists, and rigging equipment with appropriate safety awareness.
  • Capability to perform arc or flame cutting to shape and prepare metal parts.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and adherence to shop procedures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Welding certifications are considered an asset and may enhance opportunities for advanced work.
  • Crane, hoist, and rigging awareness training or certification is an advantage.
  • Background in large, custom industrial assemblies or automation-related fabrication is beneficial.
  • Experience collaborating with machining operations in an integrated fabrication and machining facility is an asset.

Why Work Here?

You will join a professional, safety-focused fabrication environment where your technical skills are valued and developed. The role offers access to comprehensive benefits and the opportunity to work on challenging, large-scale custom projects that support advanced industrial systems. You will collaborate with experienced trades professionals in a setting that emphasizes quality workmanship, continuous improvement, and long-term career growth.

Work Environment

The facility is a heavy fabrication shop with open fabrication bays, dedicated welding stations, material preparation and cutting areas, and close integration with machining operations. You will work with large steel components using overhead cranes, hoists, and rigging equipment in a fast-paced industrial setting. The work involves regular use of welding equipment, grinding tools, cutting torches, and precision measuring instruments, with strict adherence to safety and quality standards.
