Start date: Immediately

Reporting to: Director of Student Services

Salary:

$39.09 – $48.64/hr, depending on experience and qualifications as per the BCGEU Faculty Collective Agreement. Temporary employees receive an additional 2% on regular earnings in lieu of benefits, 6% vacation pay and 4.2% statutory holiday pay included with each pay day.

Description:

The Learning Support Specialist (LSS) is a regional position supporting students learning and wellness, with a focus on the students located at the Fort St. John campus and registered in distance studies. This is a key position in NLC's student retention strategy and in NLC's students in distress plan. This individual will meet with students in person, or at a distance to help them identify barriers to their success. The LSS will look at the student wholistically to help students develop skills to overcome these barriers and will link them to internal and community resources as needed. The LSS will support students in accessing personal mental health supports and will create student safety plans for students in crisis.

This position will be responsible for creating and organizing pedagogically sound student success workshops to groups, in both face to face and online webinar formats. This position responds to student Early Alerts submitted by faculty and staff, maintains student contact records within the Early Alert Retention system, and ensures faculty are trained in submitting alerts when they recognize a student in need of support. The LSS also connects with community resources to provide on campus wellness education in areas such as mental health, substance abuse, etc. This position works with students who have been placed on academic monitoring.

Some evening and weekend work may be required on a scheduled basis in order to meet students' needs.

Please note- this position is a temporary backfill until return of incumbent.

Qualifications:

Requirements for this position include a Masters' degree in a related field and 3 - 5 years' experience in the post-secondary education field or a related field, or a combination of education and related experience may be considered. As well experience and training in crisis response, in student wellness, learning strategies and retention is essential. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate sound pedagogy in the design of in-person and virtual workshops, must be a strong presenter, and be able to effectively project manage workshops.

The incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of the local, regional, and provincial resources available to students and be able to refer students to other departments within the college and to outside agencies as required. Proven ability to work positively within a team, with a demanding workload, and changing priorities is a must. We are looking for someone with excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, interpersonal skills and ability to multitask. Ability to maintain confidentiality is required. Must demonstrate proficiency in all areas of Microsoft Office, Internet research and hosting a webinar. A current drivers' license and the willingness to travel to other campuses is required.

To support employment equity and diversity in the workplace, we encourage all qualified applicants, including Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, women, persons of diverse sexual orientation, gender identity or expression (LGBTQ2S+), and others who may contribute to diversity at Northern Lights College.

In the spirit of reconciliation, we are committed to increasing Indigenous Peoples' representation throughout the institution and encourage applicants to self-identify as Indigenous--First Nation, Metis, or Inuit within cover letters and/or resume.
