Job description

The Intermediate Estimator supports Norpac’s pursuit of heavy civil, geotechnical, and specialty construction work by developing reliable cost information that reflects real field conditions. This role contributes to bids and proposals through quantity development, pricing analysis, and coordination with internal teams, subcontractors, and suppliers.

This position is suited to an estimator with geotechnical and civil experience who can complete defined estimating assignments with minimal supervision while leveraging senior team members for review, strategy, and risk evaluation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build detailed quantity take-offs and cost breakdowns for assigned portions of work
  • Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical reports to identify scope, materials, labour, and equipment needs
  • Source and assess subcontractor and supplier pricing, ensuring scope alignment and pricing validity
  • Participate in site investigations and pre-bid walkthroughs to evaluate access, logistics, and construction constraints
  • Price self-performed construction activities, including shotcrete, slope stabilization systems, grouting, drainage works, and concrete construction
  • Coordinate with engineers, project managers, and field leadership to confirm assumptions, methods, and production rates
  • Support bid submissions by meeting deadlines and complying with client and contract requirements
  • Assist with transition from estimating to construction by clearly documenting pricing logic, exclusions, and risks
  • Contribute to early-phase budgets and feasibility-level estimates for prospective projects
  • Help maintain cost histories, production data, and estimating standards to improve accuracy over time

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Combination of office-based work and periodic site visits
  • Use of computers, drawings, and digital documentation on a daily basis
  • Standard office conditions with occasional field exposure
  • Approximately 25% travel to project sites and meetings

Requirements

  • At least three years of experience in construction estimating within heavy civil, geotechnical, or infrastructure environments
  • Post-secondary education in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Technology, or a related field
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Practical understanding of heavy civil construction activities, including earthworks, concrete, formwork, shotcrete, drainage, foundations, and retaining systems
  • General knowledge of construction sequencing, trade coordination, and means-and-methods
  • Strong computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Office tools
  • Willingness to work extended hours during active bid periods
  • Valid driver’s licence

Preferred

  • Experience supporting or delivering design-build projects
  • Exposure to geotechnical or slope stabilization construction
  • EIT, P.Eng., or construction management certification
  • Familiarity with estimating platforms such as B2W

Benefits

  • Salary: $90,000 - $120,000, based on skill set and experience-level.
  • Comprehensive extended health benefits, including life insurance and long-term disability coverage.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Based in Kamloops, BC, with flexibility for travel to project sites as required
