Transit Mechanic Apprentice (Commercial Transport Apprentice)

District of West Vancouver is hiring a permanent full‑time Transit Mechanic Apprentice. This mechanical apprenticeship position involves overhaul, repair, and maintenance of transit vehicles in the shop or in the field, diagnosing electronic components, performing gas and electrical welding tasks, and maintaining detailed records.

Responsibilities

Perform mechanical overhaul, repair, and maintenance tasks on transit vehicles; diagnose electronic components through diagnostic testing and troubleshooting using relevant computer software; submit reports and maintain records; perform gas and electrical welding; and complete other related work as required.

Qualifications

• Registration as a Truck and Transport Mechanic with SkilledTradesBC
• A Red Seal Certificate of Qualification as a Truck and Transport Mechanic on completion of the apprenticeship program
• Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate with air brake endorsement
• Class 2 or 3 Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement
• Minimum one year of relevant experience (e.g., Heavy Mechanical Trades Foundation) or equivalent education and experience; current knowledge of diesel engine and transmission electronic control systems; possession of own hand tools; and completion of air conditioning courses
• Applicants currently in their 4th apprenticeship may be considered; Red Seal qualification as an Automotive Service Technician is an asset.

Union (ATU) – Permanent, Full‑time

Hours Of Work

40 hours per week; 4 days on / 3 consecutive days off (consistent workweek and schedule)

Rate Of Pay

$39.17 per hour – Red Seal Rate (plus tool allowance, $1.95  / hr shift differential for afternoon shifts and Sunday pay premiums, and a retention allowance).
