A.S.P provide services to some of the largest airports in Canada and has a significant presence in the Commercial and Residential spaces in Ontario and Alberta. A.S.P.’s K9 Unit is the largest private K9 detection service in Canada. Our K9 Unit specializes in detection of explosives, narcotics, and bed bugs.

PURPOSE:

This position is responsible for assisting any Trainers or Master Trainers in all training compliance standards and programs for our hander teams. This role ensures our handlers and canines are highly trained, professional, and capable of detecting, responding to and resolving actual or potential security issues/concerns relating to explosives. Keen ability to work with Trainer / Master Trainer to identify training needs of canines and their handlers and develop and execute training measures to address these needs Maintain and ensure adherence to company policies and procedures. Ensure proper execution of procedures and compliance for all required documentation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under the direction of the unit’s Master Trainer and or Trainer, Developing, maintaining, and delivering a comprehensive Canine Training Program for ASP handlers.
  • Acting as a liaison with Transport Canada to ensure we are meeting all TC guidelines for certification.
  • Participating in administrative functions that support the unit and the unit’s leadership.
  • Planning and conducting team briefings to ensure individuals on threat levels, issues/events or activities affecting the site(s), and any changes in regulations or procedures.
  • Performing site visits in all provinces as required to deliver support to ASP handlers and to assess and maintain our standards.
  • Collaborating with K9 unit leadership to understand site-specific requirements and expectations, issues or challenges that can be addressed or resolved through Training. Participate in consultative and problem-solving services along with Master Trainer and unit leadership.
  • Participating in monitoring the procedures of canine dog care, housing, food, grooming, exercising and veterinary services.
  • Ensuring all ASP handlers are compliant with shift logs and training logs.
  • Preparing reports of shift logs and training logs for unit leadership and Master Trainer(s)/Head Trainer and identifying risks and issues related to canine performance.
  • Supporting the K9 Unit by assisting in the recruitment & selection process of the canines.
  • Under the direction of the Master Trainer and/or Trainer participating in the training and odour recognition imprinting of new canines to the unit
  • Developing and maintaining K9 Unit Training Material.
  • Maintaining individual files for ASP K9 dogs for the immediate region.
  • Supporting development and maintenance of K9 Unit Performance Standards, Policies, Procedures, SOP’s and Post Orders as well as operational concepts to address new/changing requirements.
  • Work with the assistance of Master Trainer /Trainer to achieve Trainer level recognition with NAPCH organization.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum High School diploma or Grade 12 education
  • Minimum three years K9 handler experience
  • Minimum one year of supervised K9 training experience
  • Eligible to work in Canada.
  • Proficient computer skills such as Microsoft Office.
  • Able to work 24/7 on a basis.
  • Excellent written & verbal communication and active listening skills.
  • Must Possess a valid Security license, Provincial Drivers License (G or Higher) with a clear driving abstract, Basic First Aid and CPR certification and valid passport.
  • Able to possess and maintain a Ministry of Natural Resources license to store and transport explosives, Transportation Security Clearance and RAIC.
  • Must be willing to provide a Criminal Record check upon request.
  • Maintain Transport Canada Certification with canine; OR
  • Under the direction of the Master trainer, house and train a new (green) canine.

REPORTING LINES:

  • Reports directly to the Master Trainer– K9 Unit
