Job description
Senior Systems Architect (Data / Azure)

Design and lead enterprise data architecture for large-scale cloud platforms in the insurance industry. This hybrid contract opportunity in Toronto or Waterloo focuses on Azure-based data ecosystems, big data technologies, and scalable data pipelines, combining strategic architecture leadership with hands-on data engineering expertise.

What is in it for you:

• Salaried: $70-80 per hour.
• Incorporated Business Rate: $85-95 per hour.
• 6-month contract with the potential for permanent employment.
• Full-time position: 37.50 hours per week.
• Weekday schedule from 9 am to 5 pm.
• Remote on Monday and Friday; on-site Tuesday to Thursday.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the architecture and technical design of large-scale enterprise data platforms supporting high-volume data environments.
• Design scalable data pipelines to ingest, process, and transform data from multiple enterprise source systems.
• Develop and implement enterprise data integration and migration strategies for complex datasets.
• Architect and maintain data warehouses, data lakes, and big data platforms optimized for performance and scalability.
• Define data architecture solutions ensuring secure storage, accessibility for business teams, and strong governance practices.
• Optimize data solutions using distributed processing, partitioning, and performance tuning techniques.
• Define the architecture of end-to-end data and machine learning pipelines across the data supply chain.
• Establish enterprise data architecture standards, guidelines, and best practices.
• Create architectural blueprints for building, testing, and maintaining data lakes and data warehouses.
• Collaborate with engineers, analysts, and database administrators to ensure efficient data usage and accessibility.
• Design logical database structures and define how systems integrate and exchange data across platforms.
• Document data architecture, data flows, interfaces, and transformation logic including aggregations and calculations.
• Support data migration initiatives including validation, mapping, clean-up, and data dictionary management.
• Translate business and application requirements into scalable and sustainable data architecture solutions.
• Promote strong data quality practices and collaborate with business stakeholders to ensure data integrity.
• Provide technical leadership on projects and guide architecture decisions impacting enterprise data platforms.
• Implement controls and monitoring to ensure ethical and responsible use of enterprise data.

What you will need to succeed:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years of experience in data engineering.
• 2+ years of experience architecting, designing, and developing enterprise-scale data solutions.
• Strong expertise in big data technologies including Hadoop, NoSQL, Spark, and metadata management.
• Expert knowledge of structured analysis and system design techniques.
• Strong experience across modern data platforms including Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Spark, Python, and Synapse.
• Strong understanding of enterprise data management including RDBMS and NoSQL data models.
• Experience with ETL and enterprise data integration technologies.
• Software development experience using languages such as Java, C, C++, or C#.
• Strong understanding of logical database design and enterprise data flows across systems.
• Experience leveraging AI tools to support data management strategies such as Microsoft Copilot or GitHub Copilot.
• Demonstrated expertise in Data Governance, Data Warehousing, Data Modeling, Data Visualization, Cloud Computing, Programming Languages, Performance Optimization, Data Security, and Data Integration.
• Experience designing scalable cloud-based data architectures in Azure environments.
• Experience with Informatica MDM is considered an asset.
