The Hardware Engineer will play a pivotal role in designing, testing, and optimizing hardware components for our innovative products. You will be working directly on new and existing connected gas detecting and lone-worker safety devices across Blackline Safety’s entire portfolio of hardware products. In addition to electrical design, you will collaborate with mechanical, firmware, manufacturing process and quality engineers to realize best-in-class, high-quality devices to be delivered in volume production. Blackline Safety internally architects, designs, tests, manufactures and sells our products with internal engineering, SMT, firmware & software, and customer support teams.

In this role, you will contribute to the electrical architecture, schematic design, PCB layout, and system-level integration of multi-layer boards that meet performance, integration, and cost requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, integration, and verification of printed circuit boards (PCBs), flexible printed circuits (FPCs), and overall system-level solutions
  • Work with cross-functional teams to define system requirements and design constraints
  • Identify, diagnose and drive electrical-related issues to closure
  • Communicate regular schedule and status updates to product leads
  • Travel within Canada and overseas as required

About You

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related degree
  • Minimum 5 years of industry experience designing high-volume consumer/industrial electronic products
  • Strong EE fundamentals and hands-on experience in prototype bring-up and debugging, as well as functional verification and reliability testing
  • Experience with component selection, schematic capture and layout of HDI designs (Altium Designer preferred)
  • Experience with voltage regulators (SMPS, LDO), power delivery networks, analog and mixed-signals, and battery-powered designs
  • Experience with low-speed and high-speed digital interfaces (I2C, UART, SPI, USB, MIPI) and signal integrity fundamentals
  • Familiarity with using tools and standard lab equipment such as protocol analyzers, JTAG debuggers, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and power supplies
  • Strong communication, problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Self-starter who can work independently and collaboratively with a team
  • Bonus points for:
    • Experience with wireless chipsets and RF design including cellular, GNSS, Wi-Fi, BLE, and NFC
    • Experience with programming languages such as C/C++ and Python
    • Experience with digital and analog simulation tools (LTspice, PowerDC/SI)
    • Experience with gas detection including electrochemical, IR, catalytic bead and other sensors
    • Experience designing for and resolving challenges related to EMC, product safety standards and other regulatory compliance requirements
    • Familiarity with hazardous location intrinsic safety standards, designs and certifications
    • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensing
    • Leadership and mentoring experience
