Job description
Job Title: Construction Inspector
Job Description

This Construction Inspector role supports a major Greenline infrastructure project in Calgary and focuses on field-based construction oversight, inspection, and contract administration support. You will act as the owner’s representative in the field, ensuring that all work complies with project specifications while maintaining accurate records of quantities, production, and contractor performance. The position combines hands-on site presence with detailed project documentation, contributing directly to the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of heavy civil and transportation infrastructure works.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily field inspections of heavy civil and transportation infrastructure construction activities, including railway, highway, roadway, grading, earthworks, pipeline, and related works.
  • Monitor contractor activities on site to ensure compliance with project specifications, drawings, and contract requirements.
  • Track construction quantities, production rates, and contractor progress, and verify that reported quantities align with actual work completed.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate daily reports, field logs, and project documentation, including observations, issues, and progress updates.
  • Provide construction oversight by observing work methods, safety practices, and quality of workmanship, and promptly report any non-conformances.
  • Act as the field representative for the owner/engineer, confidently leading daily job briefings and coordinating with contractors, foremen, and project stakeholders.
  • Support contract administration activities by documenting field changes, assisting with measurement and verification of work, and providing input for payment quantities.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, clients, and field personnel to clarify requirements, resolve issues, and support timely decision-making.
  • Independently make informed field decisions within defined guidelines and escalate issues when required.
  • Support the oversight of approximately 750,000 m³ of earthworks associated with rail infrastructure improvements, including grading and related activities.
  • Contribute to safety observation efforts by identifying potential hazards in the field and promoting safe work practices.
  • Use Microsoft Office applications to compile reports, track data, and share information with the project team.
  • Participate in and, when required, lead site meetings, job briefings, and coordination discussions to align daily work plans.
  • Work extended field shifts, balancing on-site inspection duties with timely completion of documentation and reporting.
Essential Skills
  • 2–5+ years of experience in construction administration, construction inspection, field coordination, or similar field-based construction roles.
  • Proven experience supporting heavy civil, railway, highway, roadway, grading, earthworks, pipeline, or transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to track quantities, production, and contractor progress on construction projects.
  • Hands-on experience performing field inspections and monitoring contractor activities for compliance with project requirements.
  • Experience preparing daily reports, field logs, and other project documentation in a consistent and accurate manner.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to lead daily job briefings and communicate clearly with contractors, clients, and foremen.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, for data tracking and reporting.
  • Civil Engineering degree, Civil Engineering Technology diploma, and/or CET/ASET designation.
  • Valid driver’s license suitable for travel to and from field sites.
  • Ability to work independently in remote field environments with minimal supervision.
  • Fluent English communication skills, both spoken and written.
  • Ability to think on your feet and make sound decisions in dynamic field conditions.
  • Comfort working directly with contractors and field personnel in a construction environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when managing records and documentation.
  • Proactive approach to identifying issues and contributing to practical problem solving.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Railway construction experience, particularly in track relocation or rail infrastructure improvements.
  • Experience with grading or earthworks on large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Surveying experience and familiarity with construction layout or verification.
  • Experience on oil and gas, pipeline, or light rail transit (LRT) projects.
  • Understanding of geotechnical construction activities, including compaction testing and retaining wall construction.
  • Prior exposure to contract administration processes on infrastructure projects.
  • Membership or eligibility for membership with relevant engineering or technologist associations (such as CET/ASET), beyond minimum requirements.
Work Environment

This is a field-based Construction Inspector role in Calgary supporting track relocation work for a major Greenline rail project. You will spend most of your time on active construction sites, overseeing approximately 750,000 m³ of earthworks and associated rail infrastructure improvements. The position combines on-site inspection and contractor oversight with office-style tasks such as preparing reports and maintaining project documentation. Typical workdays are long, generally 12–14 hours, and a rotation schedule will be determined based on project needs. The environment is fast-paced and dynamic, with changing field conditions, heavy equipment operations, and close coordination with contractors and field personnel. You will work largely independently in remote or semi-remote field locations, using standard construction tools and technologies along with Microsoft Office for reporting and communication.
