Reporting to the Director and Head, Carbon Strategy & Partnerships, within the BMO Capital Markets Environmental Commodities Group, the “Vice President, Environmental Commodity Strategy” role is responsible for completing, coordinating, and leading detailed financial and technical analysis including the integration of regulatory and financial information, and will work on a blend of sales & trading and cross bank mandates. The ideal candidate acknowledges the hybrid nature of the commodities business, combining both financial and technical elements of the industry.

The successful candidate must be flexible, adaptable, and capable of working in a high pace environment where balancing multiple priorities is essential. As an energetic self-starter, you enjoy a challenge and thrive in a collaborative environment.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Conduct in-depth research using policy / regulatory documentation, industry reports, technical journals, and financial disclosures and synthesize into actionable insights across multiple environmental commodity markets.
  • Track macro and cross-market and commodity linkages (energy inputs, cost curves, FX, rates) and communicate second-order impacts on fundamentals.
  • Maintain a structured view of key risks and opportunities: supply disruptions, demand shocks, structural changes, geopolitics, and regulatory developments that affect environmental commodity pricing and availability.
  • Build and maintain dynamic and complex financial models for environmental commodity markets (e.g., low carbon fuels, carbon credit markets, etc.).
  • Build and maintain commodity supply and demand balances (production, consumption, inventories) and translate findings into clear market implications.
  • Develop market views by tracking key drivers and evaluating development on an ongoing basis; present findings to internal partners and clients to assist with risk management decisions.
  • Incorporate new information quickly into models and outlooks, producing ad-hoc analysis during market-moving events.
  • Provide market intelligence and tailored insights to support client discussions and idea generation; help translate complex fundamentals into actionable commentary.
  • Support partners in trading by delivering outputs from financial analysis and modelling to support corporate and institutional client risk management decisions.
  • Collaborate with risk management, compliance and legal teams to monitor evolving market regulations and policy changes.

Qualifications:

  • 2-6+ years of experience in commodity market analysis, equity research, investment banking or related roles.
  • Demonstrated experience in building complex and dynamic financial models; any programming experience supporting automation and data analytics applicable to commodities is considered a strong asset including but not limited to languages such as Python, R, Microsoft VBA, etc.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex concepts to internal stakeholders and clients.

Desirable Skills:
