Job Title: Overhead Crane Operator – Industrial Steel ShopJob DescriptionThis role focuses on operating indoor and outdoor overhead cranes to move structural steel beams and parts, supporting welders, fabricators, and CNC machine operators in a busy industrial steel manufacturing environment. You will handle materials, assist with basic shop tasks, and contribute to a safe, organized, and efficient production flow while cross-training across multiple departments.
Responsibilities- Operate indoor and outdoor overhead cranes to pull structural steel beams for shipment.
- Use overhead cranes to pull parts for welders, fabricators, and CNC machine operators.
- Pick, stage, and lay out parts and materials for fabricators and welders according to production requirements.
- Cross-train in multiple departments to support changing production needs and operational priorities.
- Assist with cleaning and preparing steel surfaces using sanding pads and grinders under the direction of shop personnel.
- Use grinders to assist welder/fabricators with finishing and preparation work in the shop.
- Perform basic bolt-on assemblies as directed by supervisors or lead personnel.
- Sort, organize, and count bolts, fasteners, and other hardware to maintain accurate inventory and efficient workflow.
- Follow all safety procedures and actively contribute to a safe working environment.
- Perform general shop duties including sweeping debris, picking up garbage, rolling up hoses, cords, and cables, and other housekeeping tasks.
- Carry out additional shop duties as assigned to support overall operations and cleanliness.
Essential Skills- At least 2 years of experience working in an industrial or manufacturing shop environment.
- Minimum 1 year of experience operating overhead cranes in a production or industrial setting.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs safely and repeatedly throughout the shift.
- Strong material handling skills, including moving and staging steel and related components.
- Hands-on experience with general labor tasks in a shop or manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge and safe use of hand tools and power tools such as grinders and sanding equipment.
- Ability to follow directions accurately and work cooperatively with welders, fabricators, machine operators, and other team members.
- Excellent communication skills to coordinate work, report issues, and support a collaborative team environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Experience working in an industrial structural steel shop or similar heavy manufacturing environment.
- Exposure to grinding, priming steel, and surface preparation tasks.
- First Aid Level 1 certification is an asset.
- Comfort working with overhead cranes and forklifts in an indoor and outdoor setting.
- Attention to detail when sorting, organizing, and counting hardware such as bolts and fasteners.
- Strong awareness of safety practices and willingness to adhere to all shop safety procedures.
- Interest in developing skills in fabrication or welding and growing into a trade role over time.

Work EnvironmentThis position is based in an industrial steel manufacturing facility that operates both indoor and outdoor overhead cranes. The role is on the afternoon (second) shift, running Monday through Thursday from 3:00 PM to 1:30 AM. You will work in a busy structural steel shop handling large and small projects, using hand tools, power tools, grinders, and material handling equipment in a production setting. The environment emphasizes safety, with PPE provided, and offers a casual dress code suitable for industrial shop work. The facility includes on-site parking and supports a collaborative, hands-on team atmosphere focused on maintaining a clean, organized workspace.
