Job description

Joining Arup

Arup’s purpose, shared values, and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

We are seeking a Power Transmission Engineering Leader to join a nationally recognized engineering and design firm supporting major utility, Data Centers and energy infrastructure projects. This position offers the opportunity to lead and contribute to high-voltage transmission line projects ranging from 69kV to 500kV while working in a collaborative, technically advanced environment. This role offers the opportunity to add a substantial capability to our growing power systems team.
This role provides strong exposure to full project lifecycle work — from conceptual routing and cost estimating through detailed design, modeling, and construction coordination.
This position can be worked out of our Toronto, Vancouver or Calgary offices.

The opportunity:

  • Perform and lead others in the engineering design, technical strategy, and delivery of HV and EHV
  • Power Delivery projects for electric utilities, and for the interconnection of renewables and data centers.
  • Lead design of overhead transmission lines in the 69kV to 500kV range
  • Support in business development of transmission line projects
  • Perform and review conductor selection, shielding, grounding, and induction studies
  • Develop and review design criteria and perform cost analyses
  • Support transmission routing and siting studies
  • Prepare and review and validate sag/tension calculations and right-of-way requirements
  • Prepare and review transmission line plan & profile drawings
  • Develop and review specifications for procurement of transmission line materials and construction
  • Coordinate with construction teams, vendors, and clients
  • Review transmission line models using PLS-CADD
  • Prepare and Support proposal development and cost estimates for new projects
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers
  • Provide construction support and inter-disciplinary coordination.
  • Perform QA/QC for transmission line project deliverables across multiple offices.
  • Grow, lead, mentor, supervise, and direct a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, designers, and technical staff.
  • Support bid and execution phase design and consulting services.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.

You will have the opportunity to do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Is this role right for you?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • 15+ years of transmission line design experience
  • Strong proficiency in PLS-CADD
  • 10+ years of experience working on project teams managing schedules and budgets
  • Experience incorporating applicable code requirements into transmission line design
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as NESC, IEEE, ANSI, IEC, CSA, IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, as needed, to achieve agreed goals and results
  • Excellent communication skills — able to interact with clients, regulatory bodies, vendors, and internal stakeholders. Ability to represent the company credibly.
  • The ability to prioritize work effectively, manage deadlines and organization skills required for our rapidly changing environment.
  • Professional Engineer (PEng) license or ability to obtain within one year
  • Experience developing engineering proposals and cost estimates
  • Proficiency with PLS-TOWER, SAG10, LPILE, MFAD, ArcGIS, CDEGS, AutoCAD, or MicroStation
  • Willingness to travel occasionally as needed (site visits, client/vendor meetings).
  • The ability to prioritize work effectively, manage deadlines and organization skills required for our rapidly changing environment.
