Position : Sessional Lecturer (Lab Coordinator)

Course Title and Code : CHM135H1 Chemistry : Physical Principles (0.5 FCE)

Course Description : This course is recommended for students in the life and health science programs. The course opens with an introduction to atomic theory;

fundamental concepts of spectroscopy and chemical bonding are also introduced. After a brief review of reaction stoichiometries, the structure of matter gases, liquids, solids and beyond will be discussed.

The solution state is then presented with an emphasis on properties of solutions including chemical equilibria in solution, particularly those of acids and bases.

The course concludes with an introduction to the kinetics and the thermodynamics of reactions of both chemical and biochemical interest.

Estimated TA support : 300 hours

Estimated course enrolment : 200 students

In-person class schedule : Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (2 : 00 5 : 00 pm)

Please note, that the delivery method for this course is currently 100% in-person. In keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty of Arts & Science or the Department of Chemistry.

Sessional dates of appointment : January 1, 2025, to April 30, 2025 (0.50 FCE)

$9,457.90 for Sessional Lecturer I

$9,930.79 for Sessional Lecturer I Long-Term

$10,121.77 for Sessional Lecturer II

$10,326.62 for Sessional Lecturer II Long-Term

$10,362.76 for Sessional Lecturer III

$10,570.02 for Sessional Lecturer III Long-Term

Please note that should the rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from the rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications : A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field is required. Experience lecturing and / or coordinating laboratories in general or physical chemistry at the university level will be preferred.

Description of duties : The Department of Chemistry requires a sessional lecturer to coordinate in-person laboratories in CHM135H1 (Chemistry : Physical Principles) during the 2025 Winter session.

Duties include the responsibility of effectively coordinating labs with all of the attendant organizational issues of laboratory preparation and delivery, supervision of lab demonstrators, invigilating and marking tests and exams, and holding office hours.
