We have an opportunity for a System Network Engineer within our IT Department at our Head Office location in Vancouver, BC.
Key Responsibilities
You will be responsible for ensuring the stable operation of the in-house computer and network systems. This includes all phases of optimizing server & network hardware, software, and communication links.
You will be required to respond to support incidents as reported by the helpdesk regarding the computing environment in addition to the general Terminal Operating System application (Unified container management system for terminal automation, logistic and billing applications).
Where appropriate, the individual will act as third level support and / or coordinate and escalate issues to the appropriate external vendor resources.
You will also be responsible for the following :
Operational Management
- Manage servers and backup servers, including e-mail (Exchange), print, database (Oracle and SQL Server) and their associated operating systems (Windows, Linux) and software on both physical and VM Ware virtualized platforms.
- Manage Cloud Services, including Microsoft 365, Azure, MFA Providers, Dropbox
- Manage security solutions, including firewall, EDR, and intrusion detection systems.
- Manage all network hardware and equipment, including VPN, routers, switches, hubs, UPSs and Netapp filers.
- Manage all telecommunications and security system infrastructures and associated software and hardware.
- Ensure network connectivity of all workstations and devices including cellular based workstations.
- Administer all equipment, hardware, and software upgrades.
- Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.
- Administer and maintain end user accounts, permissions, and access rights.
- Perform server and security audits.
- Perform system backups and recovery.
- Monitor and test network performance and provide network performance statistics and reports.
- Recommend, schedule, and perform network improvements, upgrades, and repairs.
- Manage and / or provide guidance to junior members of the team.
Working with other team members you will provide input for the following areas :
Strategy & Planning
- System & network design, architecture, and capacity planning.
- Develop, implement and maintain policies, procedures and associated training plans for network resource administration, appropriate use, system security and disaster recovery.
- Manage and set priorities for the design, maintenance, development, and evaluation of all infrastructure systems, including servers, OS, virtualization platforms, LANs, WANs, Internet, intranet, security, wireless implementations, etc.
- Manage and administrate entire telecommunications infrastructure and its associated software, including VOIP, call management systems, voice mail, interactive voice response, and video conferencing systems.
- Conduct feasibility studies for various upgrade projects, improvements, and other conversions.
- Establish and ensure that the general computing adheres to the service level agreements with end users.
Acquisition & Deployment
- Oversee installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting all core infrastructure hardware, software, and peripheral devices including telecommunications infrastructure.
- Interact and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure core application software, telecommunications, network products and services.
- Conduct research on key software, network products, services, protocols, and standards in support of departmental procurement and development efforts.
The hours for this position are :
- Monday through Friday, eight hour shifts
- You will also be providing pager coverage for on-call 24 x 7
Compensation
- Salary range $102,072 -$119,400
- Annual incentive plan.

Requirements
You bring your previous experience gained through a dynamic environment providing 24 x 7 services. You also bring strong organization and problem solving skills, as well as your flexibility to perform multiple tasks.
You are able to work independently in a self-directed manner and are also able to work effectively with a team or work group.
You have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
You bring the following experience (or education)
- BCIT Technology degree, college diploma or university degree in the field of computer science and / or 5+ years equivalent work experience managing network and hardware infrastructure.
- An aggressive, attacker aware approach to IT security, networks, hardware, software and network security.
- Proven database administration skills in Oracle and SQL server.
- Any combination of certifications such as a MCM / MCSM / MCSE / MCIIP (Microsoft Certified), RHCSA / RHCE (Red Hat Certified), CCNA / CCSP / CCIE (Cisco Certified), CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional), VCP / VCAP (VMware Certified Professional), CCIA / CCEE (Citrix Professional), Nortel / Avaya Certified Professional or equivalents preferred.
This position requires the ability to lift objects up to 40lbs, reaching above and below waist-level and a capability of climbing to heights over 30 feet.
This position also requires a valid driver’s license and a vehicle.
An understanding of the Container Shipping Industry and previous experience in an operations environment is also an asset.
