Title : Manager, Underwriting

Reports To : VP, Chief Underwriter

Department : Individual

Term : Permanent Full-Time

Work Arrangements : This is a hybrid role. You will work in our office in Waterloo, ON a minimum of two (2) assigned, consecutive days every other week, plus a fifth (5th) assigned day per month.

You are welcome to work from the office more than the minimum requirement and there may be some roles that are required to work in our office more than the minimum requirement.

What you will be doing :

  • Ensure strong technical risk assessment of individual life and critical illness insurance
  • Accountable for on-going underwriting workflow and workload balancing, individual and team goals, process management, people management, support and development, recommendations for system changes to increase effectiveness and efficiency of processes, implementation of divisional plans and priorities at the team level and input into the establishment and implementation of team and team member goals and priorities
  • Recruit, develop and retain highly cohesive and motivated team, evaluating individual and team performance, conducting annual staff performance appraisals
  • Deliver timely positive and constructive feedback to team members and the implementation of the annual performance and talent review process
  • Results focused in promoting continuous improvements finding the right balance between quality and quantity of underwriting
  • Build relationships with key brokerage firms and internal distribution partners, coach team to do the same
  • Partner with leaders in underwriting and Ind Insurance to meet strategic goals
  • Focus on clear and timely communication with underwriting team, leadership, and both internal and external partners
  • Manage and support cross-functional projects, that contribute to department, division, and corporate goals

What you will bring :

  • College or University degree or equivalent relevant experience
  • 5+ years of Individual Insurance knowledge and demonstrated underwriting experience
  • Knowledge of individual products and underwriting policies, procedures, workflow and admin systems
  • Proven skills in leadership and employee development
  • Ability to negotiate and thrive in cross-functional environment
  • Appreciation of the complexities of the Individual marketplace and competition (MGA and WFG)
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving ability
  • Excellent written, verbal and product knowledge skills, ability to impart knowledge to others work in a team environment
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and consult regularly with Chief Underwriter
  • Proactive and service orientated, results focused with a sense of urgency
  • FLMI / FALU designation or currently working towards
