Job description

About Voyis :

Voyis designs and manufactures high performance underwater optical sensors (lasers, cameras, lights)for underwater vehicles that expand capability and enhance understanding in underwater surveys and exploration. Our products have enabled our customers to survey more than 10,000km of ocean floor across all 7 continents, helping people better understand those remote, challenging environments. Our mission is to push the limits of what’s possible subsea and enable every underwater vehicle to see the depths like we see the surface.

All our products are proudly designed and built in Waterloo. Voyis operates independently and is part of the Covelya Group of companies.

What you’ll do :

As an Application Engineer at Voyis you will have a wide scope of work in providing technical support and guidance to our customers, with exposure to all elements of our products. This multifaceted role is ideal for candidates that want to gain exposure to complex underwater robotics systems and own how Voyis’ products integrate as sensor payloads on subsea vehicles, spanning mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines. We are seeking someone with a strong technical background, an interest in travelling globally to customer sites, and a proven ability to learn & apply new knowledge to solving our customers’ problems. The role will begin by learning deeply about Voyis products and underwater systems, slowly shifting into managing customer support, integration, and data processing projects.

This role will include pre-sale project feasibility assessment, front line customer support, assisting customers with hardware and software integrations into their subsea vehicles, and facilitating customer training to ensure success. This will include both remote support and frequent travel to customer sites, to support integrations and sales demonstrations. You will share support requests with the support team, first engaging with customers to understand the problem, then collaborating with internal teams to swiftly identify resolutions while tracking and reporting progress in our management system. You will learn how software is used to process our optical data into final 3D model deliverables, supporting customers with adopting these methodologies, and providing it as a service.

The voice of the customer is critical to Voyis’ product development, and this position will enable you provide direct feedback into Engineering to drive product improvements. Candidates will always be learning new things, engaging with leaders in the field of subsea robotics, and gradually become an expert in underwater sensors. It is a truly exciting opportunity for someone up for the challenge! Customer projects range from underwater scientific expeditions, subsea oil and gas campaigns, offshore wind farm installations, and so much more!

Specific responsibilities include :

  • Point of contact for customer technical support, communicating to understand the problem and triaging to the appropriate internal teams
  • Remote and in-person training with customers
  • Customer integration support, both remote and onsite, to troubleshoot issues
  • Support sales with solution development for new opportunities
  • Execute data processing to generate 3D data deliverables
  • Develop and maintain training documentation
  • Be the voice of the customer within Voyis providing post-delivery feedback & feature requests that inform the product roadmap

Note this is an in-person role at our headquarters in Waterloo. Frequent international travel is required to support customers at their facilities.

Skills you will bring to the table :

  • Post-secondary education in Engineering or a related technical field
  • 2+ years experience in Technical Support, Surveying, or Data Processing fields
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to coordinate and collaborate a team
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, prioritizing tasks to maximize impact
  • Excellent technical problem-solving skills
  • General understanding of mechanical, electrical, networking and software systems
  • High energy!
  • Bonus Points for :

  • Familiarity with subsea survey or exploration
  • Experience in offshore / ocean survey
  • Exposure working directly with customers, or in a customer supporting role
  • Data processing – photo processing, 3D modelling, point clouds, photogrammetry, GIS
  • Software programming exposure
  • Knowledge of optical systems – cameras, lights and laser scanners
  • Passion for photography
  • The Perks :

  • Flexible work hours, plenty of vacation, and a dedication to a work-life balance
  • Employee-directed personal education funds to drive continuous learning
  • Profit-sharing within to celebrate our successes together
  • Regular company-wide social events (even remotely!)
  • RRSP Matching, Health and vision benefits
  • Why you should join Voyis :

Our team is made up of problem-solvers, passionate about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible underwater. We get excited about building cool stuff and working on exciting projects like going to the Titanic, Endurance (and lots of other shipwrecks too!). We are a small and closely-knit team. Each member of our team makes a significant impact not just on our business, but on our customers as well.

At Voyis we value diversity and we’re proud to be an equal opportunity workplace. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all. We thank everyone who applies and for their interest in working for Voyis, however, only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. No telephone or walk-in inquiries please.
