Position Description :

With theleadership of the Associate Vice-President, Student Success, the Director,Student Life, Housing and Athletic Services leads a team of professionals toestablish the foundation for the development of a wholistic student experiencethat enables a sense of belonging and student success skill development.

Thesense of belonging and skill development play a role in student retention andco-curricular skill development that positions GBC students for personal andprofessional success.

Through a partnership-based approach, the Director worksacross the college to engage key collaborators in developing an outcomes-basedframework for new student orientation and transition, wellness and sport,strategic residence and housing programs and support services.

Key Responsibilities :

Student Life / Communities of Belonging

Demonstrated collaboration and engagement with the Indigenous peoples within the academic schools, student experience and other key collaborators as a way of informing the integration of Indigenous knowledges and exploration of services and supports for Indigenous Students through the Student Life continuum.

Engages in efforts to build trust, and show leadership in training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights and anti-racism in support of Indigenization within student success supports and services.

Strategic / Risk Mitigation / Student Success Leadership

Engages in the development of the broader College strategic plans to support student learning and success and provides connection to, and oversight of, deliverables within the portfolio.

Provides vision, leadership, direction, advocacy, and operational management with respect to the student experience by monitoring internal and external variables and factors to inform the design, delivery and evaluation of programs and services within a complex portfolio delivered by a diverse and professional team within the portfolio.

Student Development & Success

Provides intelligent and grounded contributions to inform college-wide recruitment, persistence / retention, and graduation (rates and graduate employment) elements of student success planning through participation college committees and related working groups.

Ensures that reporting units and managers’ annual and long-term plans are aligned with overall college strategy, and according to innovative and current research on student development and success.

Resource Stewardship and Business Operations : Fiscal, Physical, and Human Resources

Develops the human resource capacity necessary to deliver services through the selection and development of staff and design of organizational structures.

Establishes and maintains an effective working environment by directing the hiring, training, and motivating of unit staff and by developing in those staff a sense of challenge, dedication, and motivation.

Collaborative Partnerships and Professional Communities : Internal and External

Partners with the Deans, Associate Vice-President, and other senior staff members at the College to ensure that appropriate portfolio services are delivered to and utilized by students.

Educational and Experience Requirements :

Minimum Masters Degree from a recognized post-secondary institute in Sociology, Psychology, Higher Education and Policy, Student Development, Business Administration;

or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

  • Certifications in human resources, counselling / rehability or other related field are assets to this role.
  • Minimum of nine (9) relevant leadership experience, including demonstrated success in a student success environment, preferably with direct experience in student affairs (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Experience and / or training in outcome-based program / service planning and evaluation.

Skills andAttributes :

  • Developing strategic business and operational plans at the divisional and corporate / institutional levels in relative to student development, engagement, retention, success, satisfaction, and well-being.
  • Strong working knowledge of most key aspects of post-secondary delivery, including both service and academic delivery.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills with diverse audiences, ranging from students, families, and professional networks to staff, administration, and faculty.
  • Broad leadership skills including a visionary, detail-oriented, and highly collaborative work style, and the ability to strategically facilitate change and incorporate innovative practices into the organization.
  • Excellent written communication skills and interpersonal skills to facilitate meetings, prepare and deliver presentations, explain complex ideas to diverse audiences, build consensus, and influence decision-making.
  • Demonstrated understanding of principles of equity, diversity and social justice, with the ability to enhance equity and inclusive communities with students and staff of various social, cultural, and educational backgrounds.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to define objectives and innovatively identify alternatives and solutions.
  • A strong customer service orientation and the ability to maintain a high level of responsiveness in working with constituents and other college departments.
  • Able to travel between campuses several times weekly.

Interview process may consist of a practical skills component.
