Registered nursesand registered psychiatric nurses provide direct nursing care topatients deliver health education programs and provide consultativeservices regarding issues relevant to the practice of nursing.

Theyare employed in a variety of settings including hospitals nursinghomes extended care facilities rehabilitation centers doctorsoffices clinics community agencies companies private homes andpublic and private organizations or they may beselfemployed.

JOBDUTIES :

Hereare some of the main activities and tasks that Registered nursesand registered psychiatric nurses have to perform and some of thephysical demands theyinvolve :

Generalduty registerednurses

Assesspatients to identify appropriate nursinginterventions

Collaboratewith members of an interdisciplinary health team to plan implementcoordinate and evaluate patient care in consultation with patientsand theirfamilies

Administermedications and treatments as prescribed by a physician oraccording to established policies andprotocols

Monitorassess address document and report symptoms and changes in patientsconditions

Operateor monitor medical apparatus orequipment

Assistin surgery and other medicalprocedures

Maysupervise licensed practical nurses and other nursingstaff

Maydevelop and implement discharge planning process on admission ofpatients

Mayteach and counsel patients and their families on healthrelatedissues in collaboration with other health careproviders.

Occupationalhealthnurses

Developand implement employee health education programs and provideregistered nursing care in private businesses andindustry.

Communityhealthnurses

Providehealth education and registered nursing care in public health unitsand through home visits manage complex home care cases participatein community needs assessment and program development conductdisease screening and deliver immunizationprograms.

Registeredpsychiatricnurses

Providenursing care supportive counselling and life skills programming topatients in psychiatric hospitals mental health clinics longtermcare facilities and communitybasedsettings.

Nursingresearchers andconsultants

Engagedin research activities related to nursing as selfemployed or asemployed by hospitals public and private organizations andgovernments

Provideconsultative services to institutes associations and health careorganizations regarding issues and concerns relevant to the nursingprofession and nursingpractice.

Clinicalnurses

Provideleadership advice and counsel on the provision of researchbasedcare for specific patient groups within the care of particularhealth careorganizations.

Completionof a university college or other approved registered nursingprogram isrequired.

Additionalacademic training or experience is required to specialize in aspecific area ofnursing.

Amasters or doctoral degree in nursing is usually required forclinical nurse specialists clinical nurses nursing consultants andnursingresearchers.

Registrationwith a regulatory body is required in all provinces andterritories.

Registeredpsychiatricnurses

Completionof a university or college registered psychiatric nursing programisrequired.

Registrationwith a regulatory body is required in Manitoba Saskatchewan AlbertaBritish Columbia and theYukon.
