What EPIC Does : The Economic and Political Intelligence Centre (EPIC) is a critical source of EDC's market intelligence, trade research and economic modelling and forecasting.

EPIC has two teams dedicated to focusing on issues relevant to Canadian exporters and EDC's ability to support their global trade.

The team is comprised of highly motivated and passionate individuals with a uniquely diverse set of skills including, Country Risk Analysis, International Macroeconomics, Political Science, Geopolitics, Financial Sector Analysis, Research, Impact Analysis, Quantitative Modelling, Global Scenario Generation and Data Visualization.

Collectively EPIC develops intelligence and insights to inform EDC's decision-makers, Canadian exporters and investors. Internally, EPIC provides country risk ratings (nearly 150 countries), intelligence, research and insights that helps EDC make informed decisions when offering financial solutions in support of Canadian exporters and investors.

Externally, EPIC provides insight to Canadian companies through a variety of knowledge products, meetings with partners and customers and through other interactions such as speaking engagements, webinars, and other presentations.

EPIC is constantly seeking ways to innovate the way in which we produce hyper specific and actionable insights on challenges and opportunities for Canadian exporters.

As a result, we're actively investing in several data collection, analysis and research initiatives. We are also continually improving our data, analytics, big data, modeling, and structured analytical techniques.

We do this by fostering an environment of collaboration, rapid innovation and the application of a strategic lens to everything we do.

Our researchers and quantitative analysts liaise with Statistics Canada, Canadian companies, industry associations, Government of Canada Departments, IMF, World Bank, and the OECD among other groups.

Background on the Position : EDC is investing in expanding our proprietary survey datasets, as well as deepening our relationship with Statistics Canada.

EPIC is focused on developing actionable insights using firm-level data, that leverages databases maintained by Statistics Canada and survey datasets curated internally.

We have existing datasets that require restructuring and analysis, and several research projects in pipeline that require microdata analysis.

The senior microdata analyst will play a critical role in collating, cleaning, restructuring and analyzing firm-level datasets for the team.

They will serve as the main point of contact between EDC and Statistics Canada. They will collaborate closely with the senior research and impact economists on the team to derive hyper specific, actionable insights for our flagship survey and impact assessment projects.

They will also liaise with a number of teams within EDC to mine valuable data that can be leveraged to inform business strategy and decisions.

The successful candidate should have strong econometrics skills, proven ability to manipulate large datasets, a robust understanding of the nuances of microdata, and good project management and communication skills.

This position reports to the Manager, Data-driven Research, Economic Analysis and Modelling (DREAM) - one of the two teams within EPIC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support EPIC's ongoing research and impact projects requiring microdata analysis. Identify best-in-class methods to structure and analyze our existing microdata sets.
  • Become comfortable with Statistics Canada's databases and processes to leverage these databases for research projects.

Over time, become an expert at identifying how best to use data collected by Statistics Canada to answer some of our high priority research questions.

  • Serve as EDC's main point of contact with Statistics Canada; become familiar with Statistics Canada's databases and conduct research projects leveraging these databases.
  • Lead research projects that leverage various firm-level datasets, including Statistics Canada's databases.
  • Collaborate with the Manager and Deputy Chief Economist to identify research topics that can be conducted using in-house or external microdata sets.
  • Support the Chief and Deputy Chief Economists on asks and projects related to the datasets and contents derived from them
  • Provide support to create content, reports, presentations that use insights mined from firm-level datasets and present to internal and external audiences as necessary
  • Establish relationships with other teams at EDC, such as market research, finance etc. and spot analytical methods that can help assess gaps, opportunities and the impact of EDC's solutions.
  • Establish a network of researchers and analysts across other federal financial crown corporations, federal government departments, multilateral institutions, think tanks, universities etc.

Screening Criteria

  • Master's degree in economics (with a focus on econometrics), data science, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in handling large databases, preferably with some experience in dealing with firm-level / microdata sets.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience building econometric and / or causal, inferential models.
  • Experience conducting econometric research projects, using established econometric techniques.
  • Proven capabilities using one or more of the statistical software : SAS, Python, R, Matlab.
  • Ability to use other statistical software such as STATA, EViews and / or SPSS.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel.
  • Proven project management skills.
  • Proven experience with written and verbal communication of technical, data-driven insights.
  • Must be eligible to become a "deemed employee" as per Statistics Canada requirements

Assets

  • Experience working with Statistics Canada's databases.
  • Experience working with survey data.
  • Some proficiency with data visualization, using software such as R, Python, or business intelligence tools such as PowerBI.
  • Bilingual in both official languages (French and English).

Salary Range :

Quantitative Analyst 18 : Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $92,355 - $123,140 plus a performance-based incentive.

Location

  • Export Development Canada is a hybrid work environment.
  • This role may be performed from EDC's headquarters in Ottawa, or from the Community Hub in Toronto / Mississauga or Montreal (Laval, Brossard).
