Description
The Employment / Lifeskills Caseworker will provide job placement search, employment preparation sessions, partnership development and post program support for Downtown East Community Church’s employment program Dreaming In Colour,’ as well as facilitation support and case management for a life stabilization program TEAM Wellness .
They will use a strengths-based approach to interview, assess, and formulate a plan of action to assist individuals in reaching employment and personal goals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
Employment Services
- Assist with recruitment of clients to engage in the program.
- Meet with clients 1-2-1 and in groups to determine employment and job placement goals.
- Research, identify and organize 4-week voluntary work placements for each Dreaming in Colour participant in consultation with the program coordinator and students.
- Ensure that work placements meet both the clients and employers’ needs.
- Ensure appropriate supervision, support and follow-up is provided for students in the fulfilment of placement responsibilities.
- Ensure that all placement documentation is signed - either in-person or virtually by both the student and employer.
- Develop relationships with employers and community to determine ongoing placement opportunities within each student’s field of interest and to secure paid employment, education, and training opportunities for students in the post program support phase.
- Organize 3-4 events or workshops per program cohort in conjunction with the Employment / Lifeskills Coordinator for students.
- Work with small groups of students to help develop job searching skills.
- Provide advocacy, supportive counseling, mentoring and guidance to participants throughout the duration of the Dreaming in Colour and Team Wellness programs, including the post-program phase.
- Contact Ontario Works case workers on behalf of mutual clients for updates on progress within the programs.
Life-Skill Services
- Assist in developing the 8-week life-skills program, Team Wellness and in delivering the program 1-2 times annually.
- Assist with recruitment of clients to engage in the program.
- Assist in facilitating workshops and meeting one on one with clients, in collaboration with the program coordinator.
- Conduct intake assessments as needed.
- Provide 1-2-1 case management and guidance to participants throughout the in-core and post program support phase.
- Assist with curriculum development and implementation.
Administration
- Maintain accurate records of client information on The Salvation Army’s computer system while maintaining confidentiality and providing statistical reports.
- Maintain accurate written records, logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information.
- Remain up-to-date and proficient in use of all office equipment relative to job duties.
- Assist Employment / Lifeskills Coordinator in updating class teaching materials, handouts, and student resource binders.
- Using the POES system, complete required administration in collaboration with Employment / Lifeskills Coordinator.
Health & Safety
- Ensure that the work area is maintained regarding appearance, condition and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
- Ensure the safety and comfort of the ministry unit by maintaining cleanliness and food safety etc.
- Work in compliance with the OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as required .
WORKING CONDITIONS :
- This is a permanent full-time role at 35 hours per week.
- Working environment is typically in the office in generally agreeable conditions.
- Ability to lift / move 25 lbs.
- May work with individuals that have significant life barriers.
- This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a sitting, and standing position for periods of time.
- Occasional travel up to 10% is associated with this position.
Normal hours of work : Monday to Friday, 8 : 30 a.m. to 4 : 00 p.m. and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break. Some flexibility in scheduling required, some weekend and evening work may be required.
The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS :
- Completion of a two (2) year Community College Diploma in a human services field, i.e., Social Services Worker.
- A University Degree in a relevant field of study would be a definite asset, i.e., Bachelor of Social Work, or a Bachelor of Arts in Social Services).
- Ability and willingness to provide a Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE :
Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience in providing casework services, documenting, and maintaining case files, working in collaboration with other service providers, community outreach, and working with people of diverse backgrounds Outreach, and working with people of diverse backgrounds.

e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
