69 Application Deadline : Open until filled Program Overview After 4 Program, Homeward Bound The Homeward Bound program is an employment program for single mother-led families transitioning from shelter life to self-sustainable community living.

The program includes skill development, college, internships, and support for sustainable employment. Homeward Bound also offers affordable housing, on-site daycare, a parenting program, an after-4 program for school-aged children, and full-day programming for school-aged children during summer break and PA days.

What You Will Do Assist with planning and delivering after-school activities which facilitate educational and life skills development.

Provide spontaneous age-appropriate activities for children in the program. Escort children daily from various schools to our location (via walking).

Help prepare and cook healthy snacks. Assist in overseeing the safety of the children for both off-site trips and in the onsite space (PA Days, Summer break).

Work following all relevant legislation, by-laws, program, and organizational policies. What You Bring to the Team Post-secondary education in child and youth work, social services, education, or child development preferred.

  • 1+ year of experience working with children within the targeted age group). Must meet the participant requirements under the Canada Summer Jobs Agreement with Employment and Social Development Canada as outlined : be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period*;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment ;

and, have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada by relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.

International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.

Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.

As the objective of the CSJ program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.

What Will Set You Apart Knowledge of child development and learning needs of children 4 12 years. Ability to work with children and parents who have experienced violence or homelessness, and some understanding of this population’s unique issues.

Understanding of community development and child-centred approaches. Ability to work well in a team environment. Experience working with children with emotional or social challenges.

Excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Flexible and able to work in a fast-paced environment. Proven capacity to work one-on-one with children and relate to them in a non-judgmental and respectful way.
