Under the direction of the Manager of Facilities Services, our Carpenters work collaboratively with our Facilities Services and Maintenance departments to construct, erect, install, renovate and repair structures and fixtures of wood, wallboard or related materials and perform a variety of general maintenance functions.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT :
Perform carpentry and related duties by :
Reading blueprints and / or drawings or following verbal instructions to determine amount and type(s) of materials required, dimensional qualifications and required installation procedures according to present code requirements
Cutting and shaping materials using hand / power tools - assembling cut and shaped parts using various fasteners / adhesives
Finishing (ex. painting, staining, etc.) furniture and other structures using sanders, fillers, brushes, rollers, etc
Removing parts of existing structures such as walls, ceilings, cabinets, floors and roofs using hand and power tools
Building and installing handrails, ramps, skirting, platforms, cabinets, counters, shelves and built-in units, etc. using wood working machines and hand and power tools
Applying drywall, plaster and insulating materials to walls and ceilings
Fitting and installing pre-fabricated door frames, windows, window frames, trim and assorted hardware
Flooring installation and repairs
Attend to structural alterations and repairs to Board operated buildings and surrounding property by :
Mixing and pouring concrete to construct or repair floors, sidewalks, steps brick and foundations
Repairing and / or replacing materials including; roof shingles, exhaust fans, drain screens and spouts; ceiling, floor and wall coverings;
window cranks, curtain rods and locks and hinges using adhesives, fasteners and hand and power tools
Performing general maintenance such as caulking and / or weather-stripping doors and windows; replacing window panes and operating aerial work platforms
Performing general grounds maintenance such as, landscaping; removal of plant material; hardscape repairs; and general skid steer works
Ordering supplies; moving heavy equipment within and between schools
Performs related work as assigned
Ability to study and comprehend new materials / construction techniques
WHAT YOU BRING :
Grade 12 high school diploma
Valid Carpenter C of Q (Certificate of Qualification) 403A
Valid Class G Driver’s License
Ability to troubleshoot and communicate the nature of the problem to others
Physical fitness to perform the required duties
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team or individually
An understanding of the building codes and regulations
Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality and best practices
Ability to organize daily tasks and work with minimum supervision
Directly related experience in facility maintenance and / or construction
Ability to read and work from blueprints
Excellent oral and written communication skills and basic computer software knowledge is essential
This is a full time and unionized position.
HOURS : 40 hours per week; Monday-Friday; 8 : 00 a.m. - 4 : 30 p.m.
LOCATION : NCDSB Maintenance Shop - 157 McCormack Drive, Thorold, ON
RATE OF PAY : $28.07-$$32.55 per hour
