Radio-Canada Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador is looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic Senior Web Editor, who possesses strong journalistic skills, substantial experience in digital news, and solid editorial leadership. This individual will join the daily news editorial team and will be based at the Halifax station. He or she will report to the Senior Head of News and Programming (NS-PEI-NL) and the station’s Digital Producer.

In this role, you will be primarily responsible for creating digital content, collaborating on the Radio-Canada website and associated digital platforms across our large territory. You will write news stories under tight deadlines, review texts created by others, and must be able to create, organize, and prioritize digital news content. You will also enrich texts with multimedia material to increase their value for the audience. You will also be called upon to support programs to help them increase and enhance their digital presence.

Functions:

Demonstrate and cultivate exceptional skills in continuous news writing, editing, and assembly, in compliance with the Radio-Canada style and under tight deadlines. You will work according to CBC/Radio-Canada’s journalistic and programming policies, as well as its journalistic standards and practices. The work is carried out under the direction of the editorial team, but you are expected to show initiative and sound judgment. You will be called upon to coordinate or review the activities of other people.

Key tasks:

  • Write, edit, assemble, and publish digital content clearly and concisely for a regional and national audience.

  • Organize and update the web pages for Radio-Canada Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • Ensure that websites and reports correspond to the priorities of the day.

  • Support radio teams in promoting their content on digital platforms.

  • Gather information from various sources and report on it.

  • Rewrite texts, as needed, so they better fit the platform’s format.

  • Ensure that all texts respect standard grammar rules and the Radio-Canada site style, notably the correct usage of spelling and capitalization.

  • Write headlines that comply with guidelines for social media research and publication.

  • Select photos and audio/video clips to accompany online reports.

  • Critically review content and items produced by other people.

  • Prepare and write articles and headlines based on information provided by reporters, wire services, the CBC, or original sources.

  • Determine the elements to include in a report, their order, duration, and sequence. Create the required elements.

  • Suggest ideas or content for programs; participate in preparing program objectives for digital platforms.

  • Liaise with other staff members to ensure that the required material is available.

  • Publish Radio-Canada material on social media and other platforms.

This role requires full-time on-site presence.

Required profile:

  • University degree or equivalent

  • Five (5) years of experience directly related to the position, including a demonstrated knowledge of online and digital news media

  • Extensive and demonstrable knowledge of regional, national, and international issues

  • Ability to write a wide range of material related to news and current affairs

  • Confirmed experience and aptitude in writing/editing following best practices and style for digital platforms

  • Ability to select and prepare photos and videos to enhance reports

  • Experience in detecting potential legal problems and violations of journalistic policies in digital content

  • Availability to work shifts

  • Sound judgment in evaluating information and ability to work effectively under pressure 24/7 in a newsroom with tight deadlines

  • Ability to determine the news value for online audiences

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; excellent team spirit

  • Advance level proficiency in speaking, writing, and reading English (CCC)
