Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for the permanent, full-time position of Utility Operator 1 with Infrastructure Maintenance & Operations in Public Works (Sidewalks West).

The Utility Operator 1 position encompass a wide variety of general labour duties in various locations indoors and outdoors in various working conditions. By working safely and cooperatively with others you will contribute to meeting the operational objectives of the business unit and HRM.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates heavy equipment (such as but not limited to the following; Tandem, Loader, Backhoe, Street Sweeper,10-ton Roller, Grader);
  • Load and unload equipment and materials;
  • Maintain and safely operate assigned tools/equipment;
  • Work safely and cooperatively assisting other classifications;
  • Contribute to meeting the operational objectives of the business unit and HRM;
  • Must attend work on regular basis;
  • Must have ability to pass a Security Clearance and Child Abuse Registry; provide current Driver Abstract;
  • Completion of daily work related written reports, such as but not limited to: pre & post trip vehicle inspections, commercial vehicle drivers’ hours of service, job site hazard assessments, etc;
  • Communicate respectfully and constructively with the general public on a regular basis;
  • Responsible for the care and maintenance of vehicles in his/her charge;
  • Perform traffic control functions as required;
  • Ability to participate in Winter Works Operations as per the CUPE 108 Collective Agreement; if required; including shift work;
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision;
  • Must be willing and able to work in adverse weather conditions;
  • Must be willing and able to attend employer directed training;
  • Perform other related IMO duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Three (3) years related work experience
  • Must have a valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License Class 3 with Air Brake endorsement


Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have a good attendance and work record
  • Working knowledge of methods, material and equipment usage involved in Road Operations and Construction
  • Capable and willing to work inside and outside in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to work independently, and as a team player
  • Ability to follow instructions, and communicate effectively including oral and written communication
  • WHMIS, CPR/First Aid certification, Provincial Traffic Control Certification and Signage Course or ability to successfully complete.


Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.
