Overview
As a member of the military, Signal Technicians are experts in telecommunication technologies. They maintain, repair, configure, administer, and modify leading edge communication systems. They are part of a larger team providing the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with communication and information services throughout Canada and around the world.
Signal Technicians operate specialized electronic test equipment. They perform corrective and preventive maintenance, diagnosis, modifications, installations, configurations, inspections, and administration for :
- Wired and wireless communication systems
- Radio, satellite, and microwave broadband technology
- Radar location and detection technology
- Fibre optic and copper wire broadband technology
- Voice and data network defense, configuration, and administration
Work environment
Signal Technicians work outdoors, in military vehicles, and maintenance workshops across Canada and globally. In the Regular Force, after training, you will be assigned to a base with possible relocations. In the Primary Reserve, you serve part-time at a local unit, typically one night a week and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time employment and deployment.
Entry plans
Training
Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC. Signal Technicians attend the Canadian Forces School of Communication and Electronics in Kingston, ON, for approximately 16 months, covering electronics theory, communication systems, maintenance, and specialized skills. Opportunities exist for advanced training and specialization in areas like cryptography, electronic warfare, satellite operations, and more.
Part-time options
This role is available part-time for Reserve members, serving in their local community, with pay, benefits, and pension contributions comparable to full-time roles. Training is conducted at Kingston, ON, with service primarily on evenings and weekends, and opportunities for full-time positions.
