Job description

The Port Engineer is accountable for the maintenance and repair of the responsible vessels. The objective of the Port Engineer is to implement cost efficient maintenance and repairs so that these vessels are always kept in a serviceable condition. This position diagnosis and resolves engineering problems and coordinates the planned maintenance program. For new constructions this role delivers technical consultations by providing equipment selection and design input.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 10 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

What you'll do

  • Responds to the reported vessel issues, reviews the report accuracy and assesses if repair can be conducted while the vessel is at sea. If the nature of the repair requires the vessel to be brought back, determines the estimated down time and liaises a workable schedule.
  • Coordinates complete vessel examination and overhaul. Creates work order for vessels going through the refit program and controls the examination process.
  • Controls the repair work to ensure that work is completed in a timely and quality manner. Up keeps the maintenance plan and takes leadership in maintaining a complete maintenance and repair record for each vessel. Monitors the log sheet to ensure daily routine maintenance is performed.
  • Implements maintenance and repair budget for the responsible vessels. For unexpected expenses provides recommendation with rationale, costing and alternatives based on anticipated cost and benefits.
  • For new equipment purchase sources options and obtains quotes prior to initiating a purchase order. If the repair involves a significant cost outside of the budget, obtains quotes and prepares rationale for management consideration before initiating the work.
  • Liaises with the Pacific Marine Training Institute (part of BCIT) and provides curriculum input based on skills and competencies required by the workplace.
  • Provides guidance and mentorship for the shipboard engineers and provides input regarding training and apprenticeship programs. Assists with recruitment of shipboard engineers and supports development of team members through work.
  • Provides technical consultations to new construction projects including proposal of suitable vessel equipment based on cost-benefit analysis, and offering design input based on functionality, efficiency and safety considerations.
  • Performs additional duties as required.

What you'll bring

  • Diploma in Marine Engineering or an apprenticeship program.
  • 2nd level Engineer certificate required with minimum 10 years of experience working as a shipboard or shore-based engineer OR
  • 3rd level Engineer certificate required with minimum 5 years of experience working as a shipboard or shore-based engineer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of Transport Canada and Classification Societies requirements.
  • Understanding of Seaspan union labour agreements.
  • Communication skills, both verbal and written; and interpersonal skills.
  • Team player and a creative problem solver.
  • Resourceful, eager to learn from others.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task and make sound engineering decisions.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of JD Edwards software preferred.

The estimated salary for this position is $109,800 - $134,200. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
