Job description

At NDI, our mission is built around using our measurement technologies to improve medical procedures and patients’ lives. This requires product innovation that is achieved through fostering collaboration, trust, and strong relationships. At NDI, you will work with talented people who are ready and willing to push their limits in an environment where learning and exploring new ways of doing things is valued as much or more than experience. We are proud of our heritage, culture and international growth over the past 41 years and are honoured to be a valued partner with the world’s leading medical companies.

There's never been a better time to join NDI - The world leader in tracking technology – Join Us!

Role Summary :

We are seeking an innovative Mechanical Developer to join our R&D team in the development of embedded systems for use in medical devices.

As part of a dynamic, cross-functional development team, you will be responsible for researching, planning, designing, and developing prototype systems and products that are both robust and manufacturable.

In this role, you will design parts, assemblies, and enclosures for electronic medical equipment, driving mechanical designs from concept through prototyping, testing, and transition to production. You will also take ownership of continuous improvement initiatives related to existing designs, manufacturing processes, and tooling.

Scope of Responsibilities :

  • Design plastic and metal instrument components, ensuring timely development of parts and assemblies.
  • Select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes, optimizing quality, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers, industrial designers, and cross-functional teams (R&D, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Sales & Marketing) to integrate inputs and align on design objectives.
  • Conduct tolerance analysis, First Article Inspections, and design verification testing to ensure product integrity.
  • Develop functional prototypes, perform applied research, and document findings to support development and verification.
  • Prepare and oversee manufacturing, assembly, and test documentation for new product introductions.
  • Interface with vendors and external resources to refine designs, resolve technical issues, and support production readiness.
  • Travel as needed to troubleshoot supplier-related challenges.
  • Support additional project tasks as required.

Education and Professional Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years of design experience in medical devices, complex industrial products, or consumer electronics.
  • Skilled in developing complex, robust CAD models, including surfaces, solids, and assemblies.
  • Experienced in creating detailed engineering drawings that clearly convey design intent through proper dimensioning, tolerancing, and layout.
  • Strong understanding and practical application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in accordance with ASME Y14.5 (2009 and 1994 standards).
  • Desired Characteristics / Additional Assets :

  • Proficient in PTC Creo for mechanical CAD design.
  • Experience with high-volume injection-molded plastic part design and mechanical packaging of electronic components.
  • Familiarity with product lifecycle and requirements management tools such as Aras (PLM) and Polarion (ARM).
  • Strong attention to detail with a passion for creating attractive, functional, and manufacturable products.
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented, with a strong ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams while proactively communicating project status, progress, and blockers to stakeholders to support timely reviews and informed decisions.
  • Why Choose NDI :

  • Generous employer-paid benefits package.
  • Company-wide bonus program and annual salary reviews.
  • Competitive salary with a Registered Retirement Savings Plan match of up to 4%.
  • Employee stock purchase plan.
  • It is common in many positions to work in a hybrid model, where flexibility and autonomy are supported by a combination of remote and in-office work.
  • Starting at 3 weeks’ vacation plus a company-wide Holiday shut-down in December.
  • Employee social and engagement events throughout the year.
  • Subsidized professional development and training opportunities.
  • A Waterloo Region 2025 Top Employer.
  • Growing global company with offices in Waterloo, Vermont, Germany, and Hong Kong.
  • Close to GRT and ION stops with free on-site parking.
  • Being a Part of our Team :

When you walk through our doors, you will find an open-concept office that promotes collaborative teamwork and fresh ideas. We enjoy tackling new challenges and developing new pathways to serve our customers. We are looking for innovative, hard-working individuals who don’t see this as just a job, but as a career choice. If this sounds like you, our HR team would love to hear from you.

We thank all candidates for their interest in joining NDI; however, only candidates invited for an interview will be contacted. Agency calls will not be accepted. For more information about NDI and this position, please visit our website : www.ndigital.com .
