Job description

About Voyis:

Voyis designs and manufactures high-performance underwater optical sensors (lasers, cameras, lights)for underwater vehicles that expand capability and enhance understanding in underwater surveys and exploration. Our products have enabled our customers to survey more than 10,000km of ocean floor across all 7 continents, helping people better understand those remote, challenging environments. Our mission is to push the limits of what’s possible subsea and enable every underwater vehicle to see the depths like we see the surface.

All our products are proudly designed and built in Waterloo. Voyis operates independently and is part of Kraken Robotics.

What you’ll do:

As a Quality Technician at Voyis, you will play a critical role in ensuring that our materials and products meet our high standards of quality and reliability. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background and experience in quality control in a manufacturing environment.

You will be responsible for inspecting and testing raw materials, components, and assemblies to ensure that they meet our quality standards and specifications. You will work closely with our procurement and production team to identify potential quality issues with suppliers and develop solutions to prevent quality issues from occurring in the future.

We are looking for someone who is keen to learn and grow with the role as we expand operations. We are a small team with lots of opportunities to solve interesting problems. Everyone is expected to take ownership and go beyond the minimum requirements to achieve our goals, together.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
  • Inspect custom CNC machined parts, PCBAs, electrical harnesses, optical elements, and cables to ensure that they meet specifications.
  • Perform visual inspections, measurements, and tests using precision tools and equipment.
  • Identify and report any defects or non-conformities in products or components.
  • Communicate with production teams to resolve quality issues and provide feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspection results and quality documentation.
  • Participate in Continuous Improvement and 5S activities

Skills you will bring to the table:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in quality control or a related field.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and quality control standards.
  • Familiarity with precision measurement tools and equipment such as calipers, micrometer, microscope and digital multimeter.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify defects and non-conformities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Experience with machined components and PCBA testing preferred.

You'll Stand Out If You Have:

  • Experience working with quality control standards and regulations, such as ISO 9001
  • Knowledge of IPC-620/610, Experience with PCBA testing, handling ESD-sensitive materials
  • Certifications related to quality control, such as Certified Quality Technician (CQT) or Certified Quality Inspector (CQI).
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.

Not every great candidate checks every box. If this role excites you, we encourage you to apply. We value curiosity, problem-solving, and a growth mindset just as much as experience.

The Perks:

  • 5 weeks of total time off, flexible work hours and a dedication to a work-life balance.
  • Vacation purchase program
  • Employee-directed personal education funds to drive continuous learning.
  • Comprehensive Health Benefits: Health benefits from day one to support your overall wellbeing.
  • RRSP Matching
  • Regular company-wide social events

The Pay:

The salary range for this role is $50,000 to $55,000. Actual starting compensation is determined by factors such as (but not limited to) experience, skillset, and market considerations. We believe in rewarding growth, and employees who continue to build their skills and impact can expect opportunities for increased responsibility and compensation over time.

Why you should join Voyis:

Our team is made up of problem-solvers, passionate about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible underwater. We get excited about building cool stuff and working on exciting projects like going to the Titanic, Endurance (and lots of other shipwrecks too!). We are a small and closely-knit team. Each member of our team makes a significant impact not just on our business, but on our customers as well.

At Voyis we value diversity and we’re proud to be an equal opportunity workplace. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. Please indicate on your application if you require accommodation on your application, and our team will work with you to meet your accessibility needs. We thank everyone who applies and for their interest in working for Voyis, however, only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. No telephone or walk-in inquiries please.
