JOB SUMMARY

The Engineering Technologist is responsible for preparing engineering designs, drawings, and other related technical information for lower, medium and high complexity (Path 2, Path 3, and Path 4) projects. This includes but is not limited to preliminary estimates, bills of materials and work packages associated with expanding, upgrading or rehabilitating all elements of the distribution system including services to customers.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential responsibilities of the job include but are not necessarily restricted to the following:

  • Design projects in accordance with Hydro Ottawa procedures, specifications and all other applicable standards using computer aided drafting (Cad-Gis or Bluebeam) system

  • Complete project assignments including design, estimating activities, and work package production

  • Initiate project finances and material lists, using the enterprise resource planning system

  • Design, facilitate, procure, commission and report on energy infrastructure development initiatives such as DER (Distributed Energy Resources) and EV (Electric Vehicle) charging connection applications while adhering to mandated regulatory timelines.

  • Identify key stakeholders, both external and internal, determine their technical requirements, and manage their expectations

  • Meet with and review project designs with field staff for additional input and consideration

  • Ensure that all projects are designed to meet the requirements, budgets and schedules by liaising with all Hydro Ottawa divisions/groups and external contacts as required

  • As the technical point of contact, communicate and coordinate with customers, developers, consultants, contractors, representatives from the city, other utilities and other outside agencies to ensure timely and accurate execution of projects

  • Provide interpretation of Hydro Ottawa technical specifications to outside consultants and contractors

  • Leveraging technical expertise, review and recommend construction design and peer design proposals as per the Design Approval Process, ensuring that all designs meet Hydro Ottawa standards and regulatory requirements

  • Ensure the quality and accuracy of project construction work is to design standards and the requirements of Regulation 22/04 and take corrective action as necessary

  • Prepare applications for various types of approvals as required for project assignments (internal and external, including municipal consent or federal requirement)

  • Prepare all appropriate contracts and agreements using applicable templates

  • Identify material management that may include evaluating, inspecting, testing, and forecasting

  • Participate in the preparation of technical standards, guidelines, and specifications

  • Provide feedback on process and equipment failures and recommend corrective actions to promote continuous improvement in project execution

  • Prepare or assist with design related training material and deliver or assist in delivery of training, mentoring of peers and students

  • Participate in project related community events such as Open Houses for medium, large or complex Projects by providing project overviews and answering questions as required

  • Complete service layout work for lower, medium and high complexity projects as required

  • Ensure as-built information is accurately gathered and recorded in GIS

  • Perform nonlinear analysis activities using SPIDAcalc to confirm anchoring and cable tensions are adequate and meeting Hydro Ottawa standards requirements for safety and storm hardening

  • Produce designs, preliminary estimates and work packages for Fiber installation projects

  • Perform other related duties as required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Post secondary education (diploma) in Electrical Engineering Technology, or related Engineering technical discipline

  • Minimum 2 years’ relevant experience, preferably with an electrical utility

  • OACETT certification, or eligible for certification within two (2) years

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid driver’s license – Class G

  • Successful completion of Driver Competency Assessment

  • Government of Canada security clearance

  • English essential, both oral and written

  • Bilingual (English and French) considered an asset

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are governed by the collective agreement between Hydro Ottawa Limited and IBEW Local 636.

Hydro Ottawa offers a Hybrid Work Model. Hybrid work is position specific, details of the hybrid model will be discussed with successful candidates.
