Position: Cultural Resource Advisor


POSITION SUMMARY:
  • Reporting to the Cultural Services Supervisor, the Cultural Resource Advisor (CRA) is responsible for the ongoing sourcing and development of cultural resources to assist the Agency in delivering culturally intelligent services rooted in the traditional beliefs and values of Dnaagdawenmag Binnoojiiyag Child & Family Services to the Indigenous population we serve.
  • The CRA is responsible for providing cultural awareness and building a connection and a network of support for children, youth, families, caregivers, community members, employees, and other community service providers to implement traditional ways of being such as practices, teachings, and ceremonies to their cultural bundles. Includes, but not limited to delivering cultural education, training, support and coordinates Cultural Development Integration Plans (CDIPs) in collaboration with staff and those we serve.
  • The CRA will also interpret the Agencies Cultural Services policies, procedures, and the guidelines of the legislative standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop Cultural Development Integration Plans (CDIP) in collaboration with staff and the specific child, youth, or family to appropriately incorporate cultural aspects of service delivery.
  • Ensure a coordinated approach to developing and implementing the CDIP, utilizing external resources and organizations to support immediate, short and long term cultural needs.
  • Function as a resource and provide information to ensure that cultural knowledge and practices are understood and maintained.
  • Assist internal & external Elders/Knowledge Keepers as helpers when required.
  • Provide traditional knowledge, teachings and ceremonies in a safe and acceptable environment to all whom we support.
  • When and where required organize, implement, and facilitate cultural workshops, programming, and ceremonies.
  • Under the guidance of the E/KK and the Cultural Services Supervisor, CRA’s are required to act as the caretakers of traditional areas including the tipi, sweat lodge etc. to ensure they are maintained year-round.

Community Relations:
  • Maintain effective relationships with First Nations Communities, Elders, Knowledge Carriers, committees, and applicable agencies.
  • Work to promote cultural awareness, safety, and competency within the Agency.
  • To support educational and training opportunities in building Cultural understanding and capacity to both internal to the agency and externally (with our partners).
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of a resource list of Elders, Knowledge Carriers, and other cultural resources and providers.

Administrative responsibilities:
  • Document each visit when supporting children, youth, and families; securely save notes within the assigned agency database.
  • Provide culture notes to frontline workers within 48 hours following meetings; submit completed CDIPs to referring frontline workers within 14 days of the initial introduction visit.
  • Operate within legislative requirements, regulations, policies, and Agency mission, beliefs, and vision; contribute to cultural strategic directions.
  • Attend all meetings as appropriate and required.

Other Duties:

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Social Service Worker (SSW) Diploma or Indigenous Studies Diploma.
  • Five (5) years of experience working with Indigenous people, organizations, and communities.
  • Recognized and respected as someone who has lived experience and a learned understanding of Indigenous culture and traditional teachings, and they carry themselves within community according to those teachings.
  • Experience working within an Indigenous Child-Wellbeing setting would be considered an asset.
  • A combination of other educational achievements and relevant experiences may be considered as an equivalency for the purposes of this position.

Availability Requirements:
Our office hours are 8:30am-4:30pm, Monday to Friday, with a one-hour unpaid lunch. You will be required to work outside of the regular business hours including evenings/weekends/holidays to meet the needs of those we serve.
