Job description

The Opportunity

ZE Power Engineering is an innovative industry leading company that provides engineering services to the electric utility industry. We are currently seeking for a Junior or Intermediate Designer / Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our team and work on complex overhead line crossings, including railway, river, highway, and pipeline crossings. This role offers the opportunity to work on structurally demanding long-span designs, perform advanced non-linear modelling using PLS-CADD, and develop specialized expertise in overhead lines engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver engineered overhead distribution line crossing design for railways, navigable waterways, federally maintained commercial channels, rivers, highways, and pipeline crossings, ensuring compliance with CSA C22.3 No. 1:25 and BC Hydro Distribution and Transmission standards.
  • Perform structural analysis and modelling of pole structures using PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE, including evaluation of pole loading, sag-tension conditions, foundation and guying requirements, and hardware capacity to ensure structural adequacy under governing loading scenarios.
  • Develop crossing-specific designs including high-tension spans, dead-end structures, guying systems, and conductor selection to meet clearance and pole loading requirements.
  • Produce and coordinate construction-ready engineering drawings including structure framing, guying layouts, grounding details, and material requirements.
  • Coordinate with survey teams to obtain LiDAR and field survey data required for accurate modelling of terrain, crossings, and existing utilities.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders including municipalities, railways, MoTI, pipeline operators, telecommunications companies, and regulatory bodies to support permit applications and approvals.
  • Support preparation of regulatory and crossing permit packages (e.g., railway permits, navigable water protection permits, utility crossing agreements).
  • Evaluate existing structures and propose engineering solutions for non-standard pole replacements, relocations, or upgrades required to meet crossing clearance and loading requirements.
  • Support project execution by responding to field inquiries, design clarifications, and construction support requests.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with BC Hydro engineering standards and ZE Power Engineering quality processes.
  • Collaborate with project managers and senior engineers to deliver projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development while progressing toward Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensure.

Requirements

  • Required: Engineering degree and registration with EGBC. Direct experience in utility engineering and structural design, with a sound understanding of overhead power line design principles, including structure loading, clearances, conductor behaviour, and guying systems. Intermediate-level proficiency with nonlinear structural analysis tools, particularly PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE, for modelling overhead line structures, conductor sag-tension behaviour, and structural loading conditions. Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to effectively coordinate with multiple stakeholders and regulatory agencies. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and technical deliverables in a fast-paced engineering environment while maintaining accuracy and quality. Valid Class 5 driver's license and willingness to travel occasionally for site visits and field coordination. Proactive and solutions-oriented mindset, with strong problem-solving abilities, technical judgment, and attention to detail.
  • Preferred / Strongly Desired Experience: Direct experience designing complex overhead line crossings, such as railway, river, highway, or pipeline crossings, including development of custom long-span structures, dead-end configurations, and high-tension conductor systems to meet clearance requirements. Demonstrated experience performing crossing span analysis, including conductor selection, sag-tension analysis, and clearance and pole verification using PLS-CADD under governing loading cases (wind, ice, temperature). Experience preparing or supporting crossing permit packages and regulatory submissions, coordinating with agencies such as railway authorities, transportation agencies, pipeline operators, or navigation regulators. FEM modeling experience (SpidaCalc) Familiarity with BC Hydro standards and processes
