Job Function :

Prepare lesson material on operating or maintenance, or in technical subjects such as electrical, electronics , mechanical, instrumentation and electronics or other specialties pertinent to the Company. Instruct trainees in skills, knowledge and techniques associated with the Company's Distribution and Transmission Lines. Provide instruction to different levels of lines personnel, from the learner, to the fully qualified skill level and to other personnel as required. Instruction is provided in various settings including classroom, workshop and laboratory in various locations around the province, to qualify the employees or update their skills for positions in the Company. Participate in the preparation of and conduct examinations, mark papers and progress reports.

Job Description :

Prepare and update training lessons and other training assignments for provincial lines personnel. Conduct various technical training courses for the Company pertaining to topics such as electrical, electronics, mechanics, instrumentation or other specialties including troubleshooting, systems studies, and computer systems. Utilize theoretical and practical application for instructing trainees and other staff including trades, technicians, technologists and engineering employees. Receive assignment and outline of requirements from Supervisor. Perform necessary field and office research. Maintain an awareness of the continuing development in training personnel and keep abreast of the changing pace of modern technology. Contact knowledgeable staff to solicit professional and practical views and suggestion for inclusion in lessons. Prepare and update lessons according to findings. Submit draft copies to Supervisor for approval and incorporate modifications as instructed. Arrange for the production of lesson material and distribute and retain copies as required.

Instruct trainees and other personnel in the classroom, workshop or laboratories, in one of the subjects indicated in various training locations throughout Ontario such as training centres, community colleges, or where adequate facilities are available. Present classroom material and ensure that trainees have an adequate understanding of what is being presented and that learning has taken place. Prove through established feedback methods that the lessons have been completely presented. Provide instruction workshops and laboratories in the areas of skill training required for all levels of development. Provide instruction in appropriate levels of : mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, Transport and Work Equipment operation and electronic controls, instrumentation and computer equipment as required. Instruct personnel in the proper use and application of hand and power tools, machine shop work, welding, fitting, rigging, machinery testing, computer terminal operation and repair equipment, in order to be able to perform work required by a trainee when in the workplace.

Supervise trainees and others on a continuing basis during their attendance at the classroom, workshop and laboratory. Assign work with instructions and direction as deemed necessary. Provide advice and guidance during progress and assist in resolving problem areas or clarifying instructions not readily understood. Review work assignments during progress as necessary and check work upon completion of assignment. Maintain order in the classroom, workshop and laboratory. Advise Supervisor of any problems.

Participate in the preparation and setting of evaluations complete with marking and grading schemes to gauge comprehension, knowledge and preparedness of personnel receiving instructions. Forward evaluation to Supervisor and other interested parties as advised.

Assist others as assigned in setting up workshops, laboratories and other training areas for skill training, including the use of tools and equipment.

Work with others in developing training aids to enhance presentation of lessons. Review lessons developed for instructing, to determine where teaching aids could be most effective. Recommend the purchase of commercially available items for training purposes and obtain as approved. Develop graphs and charts and arrange for photographic and / or printing services as required to produce copies, slides, transparencies and the like. Establish and maintain an inventory of illustrative materials or teaching aids for reuse or future application. Collaborate with other training groups in the interchange and shared use of teaching aids or facilities.

Visit Company locations across the province to observe equipment in operation and the methods, techniques and procedures in practice under current modes of operation, in order to become personally familiar with new and modern equipment and methods.

Maintain comprehensive records of individual participant attendance, achievement and progress in training. Provide assessment information in this respect to supervisory staff responsible for the total progress and development of trainees and other personnel in training.

Maintain workshop laboratory learning centre equipment in good working order and take inventory of equipment, tools and consumable items from time to time and report discrepancies to Supervisor for action.

Qualify for and maintain Signing Authority for the Company's Ministry of Transportation Drivers Licensing program. This is accomplished by holding a class AZ driver's License in good standing for a minimum 5 years.

Perform other duties as required.

Selction Criteria : Education :

Requires a knowledge of the principles and theories sufficient to allow an understanding of the principles of equipment operation utilized in the Company at a level to adequately carry out the training activities related to Power Line Technician trainees and other personnel.

Requires a knowledge of English and oral and written communication skills to prepare and present lessons, examinations, teaching aids and comprehensive reports.

Requires a valid AZ driver's license that can qualify for the Signing Authority program.This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired in and equivalent to a Grade XII education in a secondary school plus Power Lines JourneyPerson training and intermediate related courses.

Experience :

Requires experience as a JourneyPerson in the provincial lines trade to be familiar with the operation and maintenance of the type of equipment used in the Company. Requires experience to be aware of the characteristics of such equipment and problems involved in servicing the electrical, electronics, mechanical, instrumentation, electronic control and computer systems.

Requires teaching experience to be familiar with the preparation and format of lesson materials and evaluations, the various types of teaching aids and their values and to assess and maintain accurate records of student progress.

Requires familiarity with the organization's structure, the responsibilities of departmental personnel, programs to be taught, the facilities available and the duties and associated supervisory responsibilities. A period of over six years, up to and including eight years, is considered necessary to gain this experience.

Difficulties are often encountered in keeping lesson material current and preparing lessons, instructions and exercises for various classes because of the calibre of students being taught and ensuring that material presented will produce adequately trained personnel to fill Company positions. Requires continually reviewing course content, reviewing technical literature, discussing various aspects with other training staff as well as Provincial Lines and contracted supervisory personnel, assessing the capabilities of students attending and based on information gathered, past experience and knowledge of subject matter, modify and update programs that will meet the requirements.

Requires performing duties that result in standing and / or walking for varying periods while instructing, overseeing practical training, writing and on occasion, carrying fairly bulky equipment, teaching aids or training material for short distances .

Requires performing duties that result in sustained concentration for frequent periods daily while instructing, developing lessons, preparing comprehensive reports, evaluating and grading results.

Receive special assignments from Supervisor together with an outline of requirements and discussions on objectives, otherwise work is of an ongoing nature and is planned, organized and carried out with reference to Supervisor for assistance on unusual problems encountered or for approval to implement instructional tours. Check of work is provided through the submission of reports, examination results and feedback on services rendered.

Requires on a continuous basis, assigning work to students attending training courses with instructions and direction as deemed necessary. Requires providing advice and guidance during progress and assisting in resolving problem areas or clarifying instruction not readily understood. Requires reviewing work assignments during progress and checking work upon completion. Requires maintaining order during training sessions and referring disciplinary cases to Supervisor.

Requires collaborating with training, Ministry of Transportation and other supervisory personnel in the Company, to solicit professional and practical views and suggestions on course material, or to discuss training problems of mutual interest and agree to changes or additions to lesson content and course coverage that would be beneficial to the training program, or to arrange for the use of their workshop facilities. Requires cooperating with representatives of community colleges to establish and confirm schedules for participating in instruction at their college.

Requires preparing lesson material on technical subjects such as electrical, electronics, mechanical, instrumentation and electronics or other specialties pertinent to the Company. Requires instructing trainees in skills, knowledge and techniques associated with the Company's Distribution and Transmission Lines. Responsible for making sound, accurate examinations of the Ministry Of Transportation / Company signing authority program. Errors, technical or judgmental, in the development of lessons or training assignments, in the instruction provided or in the testing and assessment of participants taking courses, could result in operating and / or maintenance personnel poorly trained or inadequately prepared to cope with application of the training to their classification and pose a threat to both equipment and the safety of self or tradespersons supervised. Such errors would have some adverse effect on employee relations

Requires exposure to hazards while instructing and demonstrating in workshops, on work equipment, laboratories and community colleges at various locations around the province, which could result in approximately ten or more nights absence from home each month.

Candidates selected for this position will be included in Hydro One's New Grad training and development program. Over the course of this two-year program you will have the opportunity to rotate through several jobs allowing you to gain experience working on different projects and in different environments.
