Job description

For over 70 years, Empower Simcoe has specialized in providing a wide range of programs and services for people and families throughout Simcoe County. Founded by parents as a compassionate alternative to institutional care for people with intellectual disabilities, we have evolved into a dynamic network of services committed to fostering inclusion, independence, and meaningful connections for everyone we serve.

As a nonprofit organization, Empower Simcoe relies on the support of grants, donations, and the work of the Empower Simcoe Foundation to raise funds for special projects to respond to community needs and further our mission to enhance the quality of all lives. The funds raised by the Foundation support people with intellectual disabilities through supplementing government funding. This enables the people and families we support to purchase assistive devices, obtain specialized housing, access respite services, attend skills development programs, recreational services and so much more!

Empower Simcoe is seeking dedicated professionals to join our Foundation Board of Directors to help us continue expanding our impact. As a Board Member, you will provide governance oversight, collaborate with our leadership team to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy, and identify and pursue new funding opportunities. This is a volunteer position.

Minimum requirements of this position:

  • Education and professional experience in fundraising, event planning, housing development, marketing, business, banking, or another related field.
  • Proven experience in fundraising, development, and/or philanthropy.
  • Maintain a strong network of contacts, with the ability to secure financial support for the Empower Simcoe Foundation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of not-for-profit governance is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in Board service or leadership is considered an asset.
  • Able to commit to a minimum of a 2-year term.
  • Prepared to dedicate an average of approximately 3 to 4 hours per month to meetings and participation in events.
  • Must be at least 18 years old, and live/work in Simcoe County.

Overview of duties and responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with leadership to support the development and execution of a comprehensive fundraising strategy, in alignment with Empower Simcoe's mission, vision, and values.
  • Identify and pursue new funding opportunities, including individual donors, corporate sponsorships, foundation grants, and other philanthropic sources.
  • Provide guidance and feedback on fundraising initiatives, events, and campaigns to ensure fundraising goals are met.
  • Support Empower Simcoe in executing fundraising events and initiatives, providing resources as needed.
  • Attend and actively participate in monthly Board meetings, the annual retreat, and professional development opportunities to enhance related skills.
  • Provide regular updates on fundraising progress, sharing insights on potential opportunities for growth.
  • Participate in external community activities and events to increase Empower Simcoe's visibility and reputation.
  • Remain informed of the programs and services provided by Empower Simcoe.
  • Assist in leading by example through participating in fundraising events, securing financial support from your personal and professional networks, and through making an annual financial contribution in alignment with your ability.

Empower Simcoe is committed to a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace where everyone feels respected and valued. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation or disability. Applications are encouraged from those who reflect the diversity of our community.
