Job description

News Editor, BC and Yukon, Full-Time
Location: Vancouver

Description of Role

We are looking for a curious, creative and motivated leader to help steer the news agenda in B.C. and the Yukon. The successful candidate will have proven copy-editing skills and solid news judgment as they help decide what, and how, Canada’s national wire service reports. We want someone who will be just as comfortable guiding a junior reporter on a breaking news file as they are fine-tuning a complex court story. They must be relentlessly optimistic and devoted to finding solutions when others see only problems. The news editor works closely with the B.C. and Yukon bureau chief, a group of talented reporters based in the Vancouver newsroom and CP bureaus across the country.

Responsibilities

  • Help co-ordinate coverage of news in B.C. and Yukon in consultation with the bureau chief, making sure we’re on top of key breaking stories while working with reporters on longer-term assignments
  • Lead the bureau’s daily news meeting
  • Assign staff to cover breaking news, routine events and features
  • Co-ordinate coverage of video, audio and other multimedia elements
  • Serve as the front-line copy editor for the team
  • Clearly communicate expectations, enforce deadlines and encourage a culture that values accuracy, speed and exceptional writing
  • Be available to work in-office at our Vancouver office at least three days a week

Skills and experience required

  • Strong decision-making skills and excellent news judgment
  • Eagerness to go the extra mile and take responsibility on big stories, and to pitch in with staff whenever necessary
  • Meticulous editing skills and ability to operate under tight deadline pressure
  • Excellent logistical and multi-tasking skills, whether it’s helping get reporters to a distant scene or liaising with press secretaries
  • Working knowledge of CP Style
  • Professional experience with different media platforms, including print, broadcast, video and multimedia
  • Experience in newsroom management is preferred

This position reports to the BC and Yukon Bureau Chief at The Canadian Press and involves travel and shift work.

Hiring Range

The base salary for this role is $103,635 per year.

Committed to diversity, equity and inclusion

The Canadian Press is an equal-opportunity employer, supports the goals of employment equity and believes that everyone should be able to contribute to the company's success in accordance with his or her abilities. We especially welcome applications from women, Indigenous persons, members of visible minorities, members of the LGBTQ+ community and persons with a disability. If you are feeling excited about this posting but not sure if you meet all of the criteria, we encourage you to apply anyway. We are eager to meet candidates who believe in our mission and teamwork, not just those who check all the boxes.
